65mm BBK 6.8 TB issue

Hey guys,

Had the TB installed today and the gas pedal is stiff as a board, it will go but it gets stuck upon first touch, gotta really hit it to make it start going down then it just seems to want to haul butt, no slow speed acceleration at all.

I saw someone said he installed the throw cam from the original TB, is that whatthe fix is? Doesn't it have orings?

Any help would be appreciated, not going to drive it til I figure it out. Sounds incredible but I need to be able to press the pedal softly and get some kind of response.

Anybody in OC/LA that can help, I'll pay ya.

the bbk TB has 2 problems, the smaller cam and a overly stiff return spring.


I'm still working on the stiff pedal issue but I did use a aluminum crimp spacer on the throttle cable behind the gas pedal to make up for the smaller cam/longer cable. I cut a line in the spacer with a dremel so I could spread it open to install it on the cable and then just closed it with a pair of pliers.


I might try swapping return springs on the tb with the factory one. I would of pulled it off and sold it on ebay if the throttle response wasn't such an improvement from stock.
did you relearn your ecm for the new tb? if not you'll experience a few idle quality issues.

I had a friend come over and we took everything off to see where the blades were, there's a "top screw" that the throttle linkage rests against, you have to turn the screw towards the linkage and it is supposed to adjust the idle and let the gas pedal some what go back to normal. Did the relearn, the idle was really high and loud then warming up idle was really really high and loud, let it run like 15 mins, started adjusting the screw and couldn't get it to release the damn pedal, the idle was surging then kept going 1/4 turn increments and I'd give it gas and see if the pedal feels any better, finally after several turns it got slightly softer that I don't have to stab it to make the pedal go down, still can't feather it from start yet but it 75% better and drivable now. Also randomly the idle settled it self about 25-30 mins after the relearn not immediate at all.

I'm going to mark the screws current position and go slightly further tomorrow and see if I can get it back to normal.

I didn't mess with the idle screw at all. mine idles around 750 in drive. I'm still going to try the TB return spring swap.
here's the re-learn procedure, I found it on the forum.


Because your vehicle’s engine is electronically controlled by a computer,
some control conditions are maintained by power from the battery. When
the battery is disconnected or a new battery is installed, the engine must
relearn its idle and fuel trim strategy for optimum driveability and
performance. To begin this process:
1. With the vehicle at a complete stop, set the parking brake.
2. Put the gearshift in P (Park), turn off all accessories and start the
engine.
3. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.
4. Allow the engine to idle for at least one minute.
5. Turn the A/C on and allow the engine to idle for at least one minute.
6. With your foot on the brake pedal and with the A/C on, put the
vehicle in D (Drive) and allow the engine to idle for at least one minute.
7. Drive the vehicle to complete the relearning process.



The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to
relearn the idle and fuel trim strategy.








If you do not allow the engine to relearn its idle trim, the idle
quality of your vehicle may be adversely affected until the idle

trim is eventually relearned.

I don't think it's the return spring, bbk doesn't tell you in the instructions but there's several technical
service bulletins from them on part 1711. If your idle is at 750 in drive, turn the truck on, let it warm up to the 750 idel and turn that screw 1/2 a turn and it should go to about 770-780 then just do little tiny turns until it gets and stays to 800. Mine was at 820 and to much air was coming in, still messing with it but that's the fix. Seems odd but it solves the problem, found guys on the mustang forums same issue 5.4 and fixed it just by turning that little thing.
