My 1988 F250 occassionally idles high. If I turn the ignition off and restart the truck, idle goes back to normal. The weird thing is it can run normally for months and suddenly the high idle is back again. I have 140,000 miles on the truck. I have the 5.8 L fuel injected engine. Please help.........I welcome any suggestions.
Thanks,
Keep on Truckin!
If your truck has the IAC or TPS, then I'd suggest to remove the IAC and clean it with throttle body cleaner and clean the spot where you remove the IAC from.
With regards to the TPS, just replace since you can't clean it at all.
IDLE RE-LEARN PROCEDURE:
Disconnect the battery cable and leave it disconnected for at least 15 minutes.
Reconnect the battery cable and start the engine "do not press the gas pedal" but just crank the engine and let the engine running.
If the engine does not start, then turn the ingition switch off and then start again and again "do not press the gas pedal at all".
Once the engine starts running, let it run for at least 15 minutes and turn if off.
Note: The engine RPM might be erratic during the idle re-learn because the computer is trying to find the right idle settings.
