2002 Explorer stuck in 4wd even after unhooking transfer case plug
hello i am working on my grandmother's 2002 explorer and it is stuck in 4wd i have unhooked the plug that goes to transfer case and also took out the 4wd fuses and still stuck in 4wd from what i have read on here that the electromagnet inside tc usally fails and does not engage or if the control fails unhooking it will make it so the front drive shaft is disengaged so since my problem is still there after that it has to be the tc itself and should i replace tc or put a new clutch in it also can i take the driveshaft out it looks like behind the coupling is a slipyoke so the coupling would fall out

unbolt the transfer case motor and pull it off....look inside at the rod that is engaging 4 x 4... move it back by hand.... plug the motor into the harness and set it on the floor below truck... turn **** to 4 x 4 and see if it moves.
After you move the rod manually to 2 x 4, reinstall the motor and don't connect elect.

normally the control module keeps it OUT of 4 x 4......... but ??? Read this.. you may be right about an internal problem in the transfer case.

about the transfer motor
soo sry it might be alittle off the wall to ask but i know the transfer motor is shot so i ordered a new one my question is are u able to drive it ok without the transfer case motor on the vehicle or would it maybe cause some unforeseen problem. and incase anyone wonders i cant put it back on and i need to go pick up the new one thxs in advance

with the motor off you should be able to move the rod and get 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive.. Not a good plan to drive in 4 x 4 on the highway for too long of a period. Are you saying the motor is now the problem, or the motor is shot and the transfer case is stuck "internally" in 4 x 4........ If its "STUCK", then it would not be a good idea to drive it........ If the motor is the problem, and it is now off the vehicle, I believe you can still drive the truck.
