Windshield wiper relay 86 Bronco II

My windshield wiper motor died and I replaced it. But now the wipers work (on slow speed - regardless of switch position int/slow/fast) and they stop where they are when switched off (do not return to bottom of windshield). I was told there was a wiper relay unit somewhere in the system that may be bad. Does anyone know where this is?

Yes, there's an interval wiper governor inside the dash that controls the wipers at very slow speeds and can effect where they park. I worked through this same problem recently. In my case after replacing both the motor and governor the problem ended up being the motor's connector where it plugs into the harness. I cleaned it thoroughly but the wires were just too corroded. In the end I cut the wires off each side of the connector and soldered them together (I thought about sourcing a new connector but a new motor has to be soldered in anyway so there was no gain; I just hard-wired it). Anyway, that fixed the problem. Definitely check that first as the interval wiper governor rarely goes bad and is a pain to access.

If you find the governor is the problem: It's located in the dash on the driver side just right of the steering column when seated. You access it from underneath. Under the dash there's a black support bracket that extends from the dash shell (near the shifer) to the firewall. The governor is mounted to the top of that bracket with two screws. There's no connector for it so you'll have to cut the harness then solder it to your new governor. Removing the driver seat will give you more space to work.

If you already replaced the wiper motor then you know what you're doing. That's no easy task and is one thing Ford could have designed a lot better. The access hole is too small to begin with then on top of that is almost entirely blocked by the upper intake manifold. Frustrating, but we do what we have to.

Thanks - I will have a look to find it. I don't know how I got the keeper back on the wiper shaft, but I did - big hands and all.

There is a wiper relay just above the e-brake pedal. Mine was loose when I bought it new as the threads for the single mounting bolt were stripped at the factory. It grounds thru the bolt and wipers will only work on hi speed when loose. I used a slightly larger sheet metal screw and it works fine. Check for that.
