Traction control engages leads to wrench/ limp home?

Hi guys,

I have a 2011 eco 4x4 w/ about 52K miles on it - its been acting a bit odd. I've noticed when accelerating quickly, like out of a parking lot into traffic, or merging on one of the shorter ramps onto the parkway in wet conditions - any time you lose rear wheel traction - the wrench light comes on and the truck wont shift out of 3rd gear until I reach a complete stop.

Just seems odd that it seems slipping the rear wheels makes this happen.

What is a little more strange, if I drive with the traction control manually set to the OFF position, its fine. In fact, in identical conditions it seems that the wheels are LESS likely to chirp/slip when I have traction contrl OFF, which is my bigger question in this post - can the truck actually behave better with traction control off? That makes no sense to me.

Some side notes: I haven't brought it in for service yet, though I know I should. Also, the wrench code doesn't come up on my cheap oBDII reader and from what I've read, it wont either unless I have a $20K unit. The wrench also goes away and from what I'm hearing, the dealer may not be able to read that code once its gone. It never has promoted itself to a "real" problem code. I thought about disconnecting the battery for a bit to see if the computer would just like a reset but haven't done that either.

Anyhow, any thoughts before I drag it in to the dealer and try to tell this crazy story, I'd appreciate hearing them.

Thanks in advance,
TAC

This is the best next step, ThirdsACharm; be sure to let us know when you decide to have your dealer inspect. Once they've had the opportunity to take a peek, I'll be able to investigate options to assist. I'll keep an eye on this thread to see when you have any news.

I've seen this too. However, in my case, the traction control seems to shut down the throttle when the wheels break loose as I would expect it to. BTW, my SCT doesn't pick up any codes either. Power cycling the key clears it every time. In fact, I wish there was a way to have the TC off all the time. I have to remember to turn it off when I feel like romping it a bit...

Updating this thread. Traction control was unrelated. It starting happening with traction control off. Was impossible to reproduce for a tech. Finally, it threw a CEL code P0770 - shift solenoid E a few days ago. Dealer has it and is replacing some bolts and guts inside the transmission. At 58K miles...I just made it under power train warranty (woohoo!) Will update with more details when I get them.

Thanks for the update. I haven't had it happen after some tune updates from SCT. Been fine since.

What did they replace? Just curious. I'm wondering if it was a single solenoid or if it was the entire valve body; or perhaps something else?

They ended up replacing the leadframe, the solednoid E, overhauled the maincontrol valve and reprogrammed the shift strategy.

Glad to have the truck back and its behaving. Though have to mention it feels a little different. This truck always felt like youre shot out of a slingshot. Seems a lot slower now. maybe it just needs some time.
Edit: Yup, just needed some time. About 120 miles in and its back to normal.
