I've had this issue for a couple of years now, and currently have the Mini Max programmer, thus just deleted the code and all was fine....until the next time! Sometimes that 'next time' would be a year or more driving under heavy loads in mountainous highways, but now I lose my cruise control within 'minutes' of deleting the code, so it's time to rectify the issue. Not sure if going to Ford for this, or its better to see one of the many private companies that deal with Ford related issues?
Often it seems that some will just jump in with telling you to change your HPFP, which I'm sure is the most expensive fix, there again, it can be other things causing the problem, and I've heard of after paying for the HPFP repair, that in the end that wasn't the problem at all...thus the $$ cost to the customer, whereas it ended up being a wiring issue or sensor.
I'm apt to be wary obviously, but I do want to get this issue fixed for good, as I have changed my fuel filters long before they are due, to find when taking a filter out, it's as clean as the new one going in!
I was told by Ford that there is a TSB where they could (I assume) refresh my ECM, but I also assume that would create havoc with my Mini Max tuner program? I've also found that the company H&S is 'no more' so getting an updated tune isn't in the cards?
Not quite sure what to do, so I thought perhaps some of you on this forum may have some advice/suggestions, as you've been helpful in the past!
I don't seem to get any hesitation with regard to lack of fuel, as it's only the loss of cruise control, and/or the occasional 'check engine' light that will pop up to let me even know there is an issue. Lately there is another odd sound (marbles in tin can sound) that goes with the CEL, but that goes away if/when I shut the engine off and restart!
Otherwise...the engine runs like a dream, and pulls well on those mountain passes even with my heavy slide in camper and 18' loaded trailer behind.
The P0087 and P0088 seem to be hard to figure out. I haven't had the P0087.
It seems like the only permanent solutions are to replace everything. Seems like overkill until you blow up ... I guess. It would be great if the codes were more specific, but they aren't.

Yes, overkill big time! Thought I'd drop by my local Ford dealership today, and they want over $400.00 just to 'diagnose' the issue! Called a local private shop that is crazy busy with working on all Diesels (have had two friends have complete deletes there) and they are completely satisfied, albeit they where expensive jobs.
They say a diagnosis would be $179.00...so I've got an upcoming appointment. They also told me not to generally 'think the worst' as it could be something far less than the extreme (HPFP change), but now I'm hearing of 'rocker arm' issues with the 6.4, so IF they have to get into the engine, I may have those changed as well. I have just under 160 miles on the truck, and other than this P0087 issue, it runs beautifully.
Will pass on any info I learn from this after it's been attended to!
I have been having the same issue. Would be interested as what you come up with.
Well, sorry to say, I don't have better news, but apparently they need to lift the cab, and change out the high pressure pump, as well as the lower pump. Not sure if lines have to be changed, or if they can be cleaned out. In addition....the will be checking the injectors, to see if they are clear...and if not, a full set of injectors would be in the mix as well. I was told, with labor, it would be between $6,000. & $10,000, depending on if injectors are needed. Apparently, there is a 'test' they can do, to see if contamination (fine metal particles) made it that far.
For me, the truck was running perfectly fine, other than the odd CEL (check engine light) or my cruise control wouldn't work.
Was watching a Youtube video this morning on this job....and it IS a big job for sure.
My truck has been in for 7 days (as of tomorrow morning) and they haven't even started on it yet, as they are swamped with 6.0 and 6.4L engine issues mainly! Did see a newer Dodge in their as well.
