Saturday, driving in ~6 inches of snow in 4WD at 40MPH at -4ºF we felt a large clunk. I don’t believe I hit anything. It sounded like it may have come from the transfer case but this is far from certain. I think that the cruise control was on but I’m not positive. The dreaded wrench appeared in the display and in a short while I noticed that the cruise control didn’t work.
70 miles later I parked and as a test re-started the engine. No bad symptoms. Later we drove home and all was well. Today I went to the near-by auto parts store and their scanner tool said no codes stored.
Is there anything I should check?? I have no idea of what happened.
If your cruise was on maybe you hit a slick spot causing the tires to spin until they hit a high traction spot which could cause a jolt when they hooked up. If there isn't a code stored I don't think there is anything you can do but drive it and see if it comes back.
To Boaterguy and those who came after with the same sentiments,,, thanks. I read your post too quickly and didn't catch on. (FWIW I read "... cruising in the snow" instead of "... use cruise in the snow".) Point taken.
To follow thru: the wrench hasn't come back and I guess nothing is wrong. I'd still like to understand what the clunk was but I guess that won't happen.
