supertech oil 5W30 with STP zinc additive and either a purilator, motorcraft, or STP filter for my recent rebuilt 302 88 F150.
All the other vehicles get the same oil minus the zinc additive and always get a purilator oil filter minus the 10 F150 which gets a motorcraft filter.

Now sparky gets AC DELCO everything just because it keeps the warranty people happy granted I haven't had to replace anything.

Why? Because they're terrible oils that do not perform as well as an oil that does meet current specs, and they will turn to sludge over the course of a normal oil change interval and WILL cause increased wear and could possibly ruin your engine. Also, these companies are run by scumbags, because they know their products are inferior and will damage people's engines, they know that most consumers don't know what API specs are and that the consumers will think this garbage is perfectly fine to use in their cars when they are unknowingly ruining their engines.

Like I said before, I'm not brand loyal and will use just about any oil, but you couldn't pay me to use garbage like this in my vehicles. As long as it meets current API specs, it's a "good" oil, and I'll use it.

I don't agree with this, to a point. There are some great oils that don't meet API specs and in many cases not meeting them or meeting an older spec is a very good thing. The latest few versions of the API specs haven't been about creating an oil that's better for the engine but creating an oil that is better for emissions. The best example of this is the removal of Zinc (DiakylDithioPhosphates, better known as ZDDP) It depends on the engine, in a brand new modern engine the latest spec is good, in an older engine it certainly is not.

10w30 with whatever brand and filter is on sale at auto-zone or the wall-mart super-tech special. Dino oil is dino oil to my truck and other than a zinc additive for the new engine when its dropped in it'll still run the same stuff.

Congrats on the 300K and I wouldn't stray too far away from what the engine's already been using, but here's a reference if you want to "experiment":

I don't think he's tanking about old fashioned or higher zddp oils, like Amsoil Zrod oil (?), Klotz, or even diesel oils that don't carry a gasoline rating.

He was referring to things like "star brand" or "Best oil co." brand no name oils that you find in a generic quart bottle at gas stations and the like. They may have a non detergent or an SA rating, and have no place even in a lawn mower engine for that matter...

Personally I like to use shell rotella T5 10w-30, as its gasoline rated but still have the stout add pack of a diesel oil. In the winter I usually drop to a 5w-30 syn if its going to get near zero.

cheers

Probably, but the distinction needed to be made, API isn't everything.

Also while I'm at it, non-detergent oils have their place as well. Largely in the breaking in of new engines.

I pretty much agree with someone elses statement. If you change your oil as often as you are supposed to, it pretty doesnt matter which oil you use. However, if you are the person that gets opne oil change a year or every ten years, hmmm, I dont know but it would matter then.

I use Shell Rotella 15w-40 on all my vehicles as well, and buy the 5 gallon bucket. For my truck's oil filter, I use Motorcraft FL1A. For my 2000 Vmax, my wife's Quest van, and my Suzuki XL7, I use Wix oil filters...

Truck--when it was together. Valvoline 20w-50 racing in winter, 50 or 60 weight racing in summer. I was real hard on the truck. I think I am on 6th motor, none oil related. Has been in thousands of pieces for about 8 years. hopefully will be able to get together one of these days.
96 Bronco --260,000 + Havoline 10w-40. Change spring and fall.

The following is not my opinion. But you have to remember, this opinion was given in 1980. Took my motor to machine shop to warm over my 400 the first time. My friend ran the machine shop. He told me I need to change oil, I asked why? He said you have been using Penzoil. I asked how he knew, then he showed me the inside of the valve cover, had a brown crust on it. (This motor oil had been changed on a regular basis since I bought it new. Had 36000 on it when I pulled apart to warm up.) Used Penzoil. I asked him what to use? His reply "anything but penzoil" I thought he was biased. I did change oil to Quaker state for a while Till I went to a 429. When I built my first 460 I had changed machine shops and had been building engines for customers. The machine shop I was using built motors for alll the big stock car racers around. I asked him about the Penzoil thing since I thought my buddy was biased. He said exactly the same thing, " anything but penzoil". This was at least 6 years later.
I do know friends that use penzoil and have over 200000 on their trucks. Just thought I would throw this opinion out there. Pulled my friend 400 apart out of his 78 Bronco with over 200000 miles and his valve cover was spotless as was the valley. He used Havoline.

Just remember this is an opinion! And not mine.

I used to work for a machine shop as a teenager, my job was to disassemble and clean the engines. I could always tell the engines that used Pennzoil right away. In fact everyone in the shop knew when I opened up a Pennzoil engine, they stank up the whole place. Guys would walk buy and just say "bleeping Pennzoil" we all knew what that smell and the crud in the engine was.

That said it's not true anymore, it was caused by sulfur in their base stock and they fixed that long ago.

Ditto on the FRAM being JUNK.. they are but a "name" anymore.... Used to be an O'Reilly store manger.. we had a board someone before me had made up, with several of the oil filter brands we sold CUT OPEN and mounted on it... so you could SEE how they were made.. Fram was BY FAR the worst!

Our personal store joke line was "Friends don't let Friends BUY FRAM"! LOL!

One of the Corp "big shots" came thru one day.. saw that board.. and made us toss it out!! Didn't like us dissing brands we sold... Glad to say.. I no longer work there... The Company changed once the last of the Original founders retired.. and the "new young hot shots" took over..

Fram ...Microgard.. and the other "odd off names" etc.. beware..

WIX.. MOTORCRAFT.. AC Delco etc were good bets.. Napa were good too.. was made by WIX.. Take a WIX #.. remove the "5" in front.. and you have the NAPA number! Wix 51010 = 1010 Napa etc. Baldwin were good..
Car Quest Filters are made By Wix for them...

Texaco Havoline is a very good mid price oil.. i use it.. 13.XX for a 5 gallon jug at Wally world...
