What kind of oil/synthetic/blend do you use? I have a 1990 5.8
EFI with 300k miles
Uh oh, oil debate here we come
I use good old conventional Valvoline with almost 230k on the odometer, no need to run special high mileage oil if you dont wanna. Diesel oil (for extra additives) or synthetic are good options as well
When I have to add I use what ever is on sale. When they do a oil change its what ever they use at the shop I stop at. I don't change my own oil so I cant tell you what kind they use.
ETA. I just went and looked at the two quarts I have on hand [for adding when low] and it looks like Castrol GTX was the winner the last time I picked up a few quarts.
Yeah around where I live Advanced Auto will have a "special" on oil changes (purolator filter then varying brands of oil). I use 10w30 dino of whatever is on special. Last time it was Pennsoil but next time I'm going to try Castrol just to see if it makes any difference in a slow rear main leak I have going on. A new PCV helped it quite a bit but it's still leaking a tiny bit I think. I doubt it makes much difference however on a high mileage truck I would try high mileage oil and see if that does anything good for it.
I run amsoil in every vehicle I own, 3 Fords, an 82 VW Diesel Rabbit pickup and Jeep Grand Cherokee. I like changing my oil once per year, its higher cost up front but pays for itself in the long run.
I use Mobil One synthetic on my 1994 5.8 (170k) and on my 2007 5.4 (70k). But people will fight on here all day about their favorite oil and why it's better. The important thing is to change it. And don't use Fram filters.
Fram filters are glued together, so small pieces of plastic can break away and enter the oil. Also I've heard they don't have a bypass valve, but the threat of chunks in my oil and inner engine is enough of a deterrent for me.
I run Shell 10w-30 or 5w-30 in the daily drivers. Then Amsoil 5w-30 in the Mach. I run Motorcraft fterse in all the Fords and a Purolator in the Plymouth. Seems to be doing well. I am thinking g about swathe diesel over to Mystic Diesel 15w-40.
