Oil additives

I have read on here about different brands and types of oils being used. When I bought the truck It had about 58,000 miles on it a year ago. Now its got 74,000 on it. The owner always used Rotila. The first couples changes I used Rotila also. I noticed by the time 3000 miles came around I would have to add 2 qts. My father has a old 6.9 diesel and he seemed to have the same problem. Then we both changed to a brand called Multi-Guard. It has the exact same specs as Rotila. Ive been using it for the past 4 or 5 changes and have never had to add any oil between services. Any ideas? Also there is a couple of mechanics around that's says I should run it one qt over and also use Lucas Synthetic. I already use the Lucas fuel additive for lube and it seems to give a little more power or more responsive. Any professional thoughts on these?

I'd stay away from oil additives. Most are not designed to handle the shear, and lack the anti-foaming additives required with our HPOP. I'll roll over 287k tomorrow and don't use any oil additives. Overfilling the oil can be bad as well. Stick to keeping the oil within the hash marks on the dipstick and change the oil at the proper interval.

I googled multi-guard oil and can't find it... do you mean golden motor-gaurd?
I agree with Chris.. you really don't need any additives in your oil if you use what Ford recommends as far as spec's of the oil..

What about the oil burn off or use with using Rotila? Anyone else experience this?

I've noticed different oils tend to burn off, or produce more blow by (or CCV exhaust) than others. I've never seen 2 qts in 3,000 miles with Rotella, but I'm guessing 3,000 miles comes around a lot quicker for me than it does for you.
