Zf5 oil/seal questions

My 94 f250 with the zf5 and 4wd recently had the clutch changed. I have only driven it a few times since then, and I just noticed some big oil puddles. My dad and I looked around and got confused as hell, because it was dripping down from the floor of the cab, until i realized that it got flung all up there from the universal right behing my transfer case.

Assuming that the issue is the oil seal at the back of my transfer case, is it a coincidence that the seal is bad right after the clutch job? Could it just not be installed correctly after tht job, or do i need to order a new seal and replace it? Any advice or insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Are you seeing engine oil or gear oil? In either case, something's not right; the transfer case and tranny should both have ATF in them.

I had assumed it to be transmission fluid that was leaking.. Although, my dad did specifically mention that it didnt smell like tranny fluid. But what does that mean?? Am i not correct in thinking it is just the seal that was leaking?

You need to identify what's leaking, first. Put some WHITE cardboard under the truck, or wipe it with a WHITE paper towel. Then you can get the color.

Your transfer case seal is bad, this happens when they pull the drive shafts to do your clutch and they slide the yoke in and the rusted/dirty spot on the yoke destroys the seal. You have a 50/50 chance that a new seal will make it stop leaking, most of the time the yokes are worn where the seal goes and where it goes into the transfer case making it loose and a new seal unable to take up the slack. (This is all a assuming the rear of the transfer case is leaking, if the front yoke is leaking a new seal will fix that)

Ok, so I will need to replace the seal. Simple job right? Just take apart the back of the transfer case and pull the driveshaft, and figure out how to put one the new seals in. Can somebody show me a link to what part i should be looking for? Thanks again guys!

Just search for "BW1356 rear seal" if that picture doesn't work.

Basically you'll pry it out with a screwdriver/pybar working around the edges, and then carefully work the new one back in. Proper practice would be to use a press and something to press on the outer ring there, but I've done it with a hammer and block of wood(and a lot of patience).

Yep simple job, you only need to remove the drive shaft and the slip yoke will come out of the transfer case with a bit of atf too. Pry old seal out and tap the new one in with the drain hole in the seal pointing down. Also check the slip yoke with a straight edge along it's length and hold it up to light, any gaps between it and the straight edge/ruler and it will leak.
