Take a bolt out of your cover and match the threads to that and how ever thick the new cover is add that to the length

No drain plug on the 08 cover. Bolts you need are 5/16 x 1 1/4 length NC. This is an odd ball length, I found mine in allen head at home depot, but mcmaster has then in stainless and such, I'll probly switch them out at some point for stainless stuff.

I just bought a G2 aluminum cover with drain hole. My factory diff cover was so rusty I hated to touch it. I also got a LubeLocker reusable gasket, which I prefer to RTV.

I don't see a reason why you would need a drain for the diff.
When I change the fluid I like the fact that the cover has to come off it give me the chance to inspect everything

Your post (from all these years ago) helped recently guide me in the right direction. It's actually 5/16x18. I went on a wild goose chase for 5/16x20 and it basically does not exist. But after several phone calls, and much internet research, I discovered it was 5/16x18 (thankfully, as that size is readily available at most hardware stores.)

5/16x18x1 was the perfect size for the thicker aftermarket cover mounting flange. The little 8mm wave lock washers were perfect fit as they were snug on the bolt and small enough diameter to fit inside the recessed holes on the new cover.

1993 F250 Sterling 10.25 rear.

This was the 3/8" hardware provided by the seller, next to the OE Ford 5/16" bolt.
