Rear Diff Cover

Read here a while back where someone was talking about replacing the rear diff cover. Where can I get the best price on one that won't rust out? Also did someone mention that they had their cover powder coated? Anything special that you have to do if you have it powder coated when you put it back on? How long did it take to get it coated and be ready to put back on the truck?

I would buy mine from www.powerstrokeshop.com or other like supplier. I bought mine from fordparts.com, before I knew about powerstrokeshop, and I waited forever. They were on backorder and was never informed of it.

When I got mine, it's a nice aluminium cover. I just shot it w/ some high temp semi gloss paint and installed some Stainless Socket head screws (5/16 UNC x 1-1/4", IIRC). Very happy w/ the cover.

I don't own one or have personal experience with them, but I read where the Magnatech's or whatever the name is can cause early pinion seal failure. This is due to the increased oil capacity it provides. I guess the cover could be used, but use the axle tube fill hole, not the plug in the cover. But why spend hundreds of dollars for a cover when you can get a finned aluminium cover from ford for less than 50 bones? JMO

Non painted/powdercoated also allows faster cooling too IMO.

$50, that is sweet!

I ordered the finned alum. cover from fordparts.com early on. I didn't have to wait long, maybe 6 to 9 days it was here. I had my brother's shop do the powdercoat and he shipped it to me. So, don't know how long a powdercoat would take. I know there is a listing on craigslist.org in my area from someone advertising powdercoating. May want to look around in your area.

My understanding is that these finned covers available now are only for SRW trucks, is that not correct?

I'd love to find one of these new Ford covers to fit a DRW axle......

There is a huge thread on this topic (a few months old) in the Super Duty forum that I followed for a couple weeks, and it was concluded that the SRW trucks were the ones that would benefit from these covers and the DRW guys would not.

I sure hope that has changed-

How can an increase in oil capacity cause early pinion seal faulure? Seems to me that extra fluid would help to keep the seals soft longer. It doesn't make sense to me.

So powder coating doesn't change anything? No problems with the seal? How much did you pay for the cover from fordparts.com?
