Looking For an Answer

Morning All- I have a 1990 F-250 3/4T L6 Long Bed w/ Manual

Here are the symptoms:
If Truck is cold will not start - Fuel Pressure is Good & I Have Spark
Spray gas into Throttle Body - Truck Fires Up- However - Check Engine Lite is on
It Struggles Big Time - Sounds like its starving for Gas or Air.. Not sure which
If i drive the car (very carefully) feathering the clutch and throttle so I can sputter down the road - after about 20 minutes or so - the engine on it's own revs up to about 2k Rpm's for 10 seconds - Check Engine lite goes off Truck runs amazing!
If i leave the car for more than 2 hours it will start on its own, but the check engine lite comes back on - fixes itself in about 3-5 minutes. under 2 hours no issues?

Hey coach, welcome to FTE!

You'll want to check the fault codes in the computer and post them up so we can help interpret possible causes.

You can do this a couple ways:
Follow this how-to... Ford Fuel Injection » How To Run a Self-Test, or you can buy an Innova 3145 Code Reader that will work with your truck, about $25 online.

Also, what was your fuel pressure reading?

Did it just start doing this, or was there work done to the truck right before, or...??

Just bought the truck a few months ago. Had the issue when I bought it.
Fuel pressure was 50psi...

I'll get the codes and post them asap

The code book is nice (PCED manual) but it cost a lot of money. They put one out for each year.
The book that comes with the 3145 has codes in it but they are not 100% right.
Just post the codes back here in your thread and tell us if they are KOEO, CM or KOER codes.

PCED = POWERTRAIN CONTROL/EMISSIONS DIAGNOSIS Manual.

I bough the extension cable and use it with my F53 but not with my F-150 if I am just running KOEO and looking at the CM codes.
So it is up to you but it is nice if are running KOER as you can set in the seat and let it tell you when to goose it, turn the wheel, push the brake pedal or push the switch on the end of the stalk/dash.

Hey Subford, can you expound on your statement re: the 3145 codes not being right? I'm working on my 1989 E150 and you have me wondering if I can trust my coder results. Thanks

After buying the 3145 I had an error and I looked it up in the book that came with it and it seemed wrong. So I went to the Ford shop manual and it was wrong for what the error was. There deduction of the code may have been right for one of the tests but not for the test that the code came from.

Well I guess overall we're close?

I have a 31 code but something doesn't seem right about just replacing the EGR and Sensor without knowing for sure. I found another site and the code description gives me some things to try. So,,,,,,

Thanks for the reply!

Can you tell us what 31 code you have?
It could be either KOEO, CM or KOER.
