03 sport trac remote start installation help

I bought an Avital 4103 and the xpresskit pkfm bypass, and both have been a headache for me to get working on my 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, and I'm hoping you guys can help me out. The main problem I'm having is that every site I find that has a wiring guide is different. the12volt, commandocaralarms, directechs, and audiovox, all have different info. If anyone could help me fill in the blanks here or correct what I have, I would greatly appreciate it.

Be a little more specific as to what problem you're having, what connections in particular are you having a problem with. Or, have you made all your connections and the remote start isn't working.

The problem I'm having is identifying the wires on the ignition harness. All the websites I can find have conflicting information.

Have you ever installed an alarm and or remote start before? I ask this,
because the wires you are looking for are pretty easy to locate even if you don't have the wiring diagram. Use a multimeter (some people still use a test light here), to locate the correct wires. You already have an idea what color wires to look for, once located, test them to be sure. Personally, I like to pick up constant 12v at the battery. It takes a little more work, but leaves more room for the other connections at ign. harness. I think it's safer in the long run and easier to eliminate the alarm/remote start system in the event of another problem. (They are always getting blamed by mechanics when they can't find the real source of an "electrical problem".)
Here are the most probable wire colors and how to test for them.

12V YELLOW + Should be 2 wires hot at all times
STARTER Red/Lt + Shows 12v when cranking ONLY
TRUE IGN. lt. green/purple + Shows 12v with key on and while cranking
IGN. 2 pink/black + Shows 12v with key on but not while cranking
ACCESSORY 1 Brown + Use a jumper wire from constant 12v to Brown
wire with key OFF, heat/ac fan should come on
(make sure ventilation is not off)
ACCESSORY 2 Black/lt.green Test same as for Brown

Good luck!!

This will be my first remote start. I've done remote locks before, but this is turning out to be an entirely different beast. Thanks for the guidance.

If you send me a private message with the request (include year and model along with what you're looking for as a reminder to me) along with an e-mail address that can accept PDF files, I can send you the wiring diagram for the starting system from the factory service manual.

Have you already programmed the bypass module to the PATS system and confirmed it is working correctly?

The store I bought it from programmed it for me. What is the best way to confirm it works?

They would have needed to have the vehicle and 2 previously programmed keys, unless that module somehow clones an existing key and they borrowed that from you. I suspect they programmed it for your model year and make, but not to the vehicle.

Probably the best way to confirm it works is the get it installed and try a remote start event. If they start does not work and you have a flashing "Theft" or "Security" light, you know it's not programmed to your vehicle anti-theft system.

I'm not real familiar with the expresskit modules since I use the Fortin modules, but it's possible the store just updated the firmware. Especially in the older vehicles, the bypass modules are programmed at time of installation into the host vehicle. Again, I'm not familiar with the expresskit modules, but you won't know until you install it if it works or not. To be sure you installed the alarm/remote start properly, you can test the remote start by having a key in the ignition, but NOT ON, just slide the key in, that will allow the remote to start if wired properly, then you can continue with the bypass module. Again, good luck.

I spent a couple hours working on it today, got everything hooked up properly, and it still didn't work. I eventually went back to the dealer, got a new one of the same model, plugged it into the harnesses, and it works. Now I get to play with the pats, but fortunately it's only 3 wires.
