That would be a unique swap!

That is a lot of work for a temporary swap.

The AMC 6 cylinder engines were pretty tough little engines. The one you mention sounds like it probably either came from a Jeep or IH Scout. Probably wouldn't be all that difficult to put in. Had a Scout with a 258 and 3 speed and it actually ran very well. My Jeep has a 4.0 which is basically the same engine. If it was free, runs good and you can do the work yourself go for it. You will probably be the only one with an AMC powered truck.

For a temporary measure, it will be a lot of work. Maybe the radiator inlet/outlets will work as-is, but motor mounts surely won't, and the stock engine uses bellhousing mounts for the main support. The AMC BH won't have those provisions so you'll also need a rear trans crossmember/support. Driveshaft, accelerator linkage, clutch linkage, fuel line, etc all need to be adapted or modified. Sometimes "free" really isn't.

What's wrong with your original motor? Does it just need a rebuild? That's the quickest and likely cheapest solution.

Doing any engine swap won't be cheap either by the time you get everything done and safe. Save the work and money and rebuild yours unless you want to do a permanent swap.

I'd bet you can find a good used Y-block for a couple hundred bucks, that may need a rebuild but is a much better starting point. Check the Classifieds here and on Craigslist.
