1977 4.9 six to 460 engine

I have been looking through the posts for my topic and don't seem to see any swap info regarding the 300 4.9 inline six to 460 engine swap. My truck is a 2wd and I keep seeing a lot of posts regarding 4X4 and not the 2 wheel drive with the smaller engine to start with. I currently have a 3 speed manual transmission and want to convert to a C-6 also. Will the stock 6 cyl frame mounts work and will the transmission cross member work? If not is there any easily found items that I can buy and what would would they be. Do I have to buy the $200 aftermarket items or is there any easily found stock items I could find. If so what vehicles should I look at? We don't have many good parts yards that carry these items for the truck in my area. Since Ford put out 460's in 2wd I'm assuming I can pull brackets from another 76-79 ford truck. But I need to know if I can pull from F250 and f350. Also once the engine is installed does the C-6 need a different transmission crossmember? If not does it need a different transmission mount?

Well, thanks for all the answers lol. The only thing I have found out is the f150 - f350 2wd mounts and perches will definitely work from 1976 - 1979. I don't know if any other vehicles will work. It seems the 4 x 4's have different mounts and did not come w/ the 460. The E150 - E350 used different brackets etc. Hope I can find some because I'm not impressed with the aftermarket ones. Been reading stories about breakages.

I've changed these truck's over and the cheapest way is to buy the mounts from Trans-dapt. The Ford parts are high priced if you can find them. The trans cross member is the same. It's getting harder and harder to find these in junk yards.

Yeah, seems like that's the way I will have to go. Dead of winter here so I still have some time to look since I can't pull the old engine right now. Thanks for the post, the crossmember info is very helpful.

I have a 460 engine from a F250 Supercab Camper Special that has 39,000 original miles on it. It has sat idle for 20 years. It worked when it was parked and just needs a good cleaning to get rallying again.

I am planning on doing a 12v cummins swap. I may get this engine running first, we'll see how expensive the swap is first.

If you are interested in the 460, lets chat.

I already have a 460 and a 429. What I am needing is the brackets and mount parts from engine to frame. I would rather have the Ford parts and not the aftermarket parts. May have to buy aftermarket any way, unless somebody on here has them.

460 mounts

Steve, I just removed and sold the 460, C6 from my 68 2wd Ranger. I still have the Ford mounts, all 6 pieces. Also a set of headers, with the copper gaskets with bell mouth connections , a crossover that cleared the C 6. Also the Saginaw power steering box.
I converted from a 360 to a 460 in 1974 using the Ford mounts, I was the first one to do this in the New Orleans area, I also had to replace the front springs. The reason I am selling this is because I am converting to a CV front clip with a 5.4 sohc that I plan on turbocharging.
Call me. I would like to see this stuff put to good use. Kenny Nunez h504 469 2320h 504 427 6905.

Steve, from what I've read when researching a 460 swap, you can use factory Ford parts. Find a 73-79 250/350 with 460 in the junk yard, get the mounting towers off the frame. They should be stamped with engine size. Then you can use Ford motor mounts & supposed to fit right in. All bolt in parts. IIRC the trans x-member & mounts are the same for C-6 & manual.

No 460's with 4WD or a M/T until 1983, F250/350's only. Econoline 460, Passenger Car 429/460, 1980 and later 460 engine mounting parts will not work on 1979 or earlier F100/350's.

1973/79 F100/350 460 engine mounting parts are the same. All these parts are obsolete, Ford part numbers listed for clarification.

D3TZ-6028-A Right & D3TZ-6029-A Left .. Engine Supports aka towers/stands/perches.

D3TZ-6030-A Right & D3TZ-6031-A Left .. Brackets. These bolt to the block, the rubber insulators bolt to these, then to the supports.

2) D3TZ-6038-A .. Right/Left Rubber Insulators.

D3TZ-6A023-A .. Rear Engine Support (some people call this a crossmember). Same as 1973/76 F100/250 360/390 2WD C6.

D3TZ-6068-C .. Rear Engine Rubber Insulator, bolts to D3TZ-6A023-A.

1973: I sold a pal of mine these parts so he could install a 460 in his 1970 F100 Ranger XLT that came w/a 360.

And, since there were no aftermarket sources for these parts until years later, I sold these parts to dozens of other customers.

So, I didn't need to look up any of the parts numbers, as I memorized them decades ago. I've listed this same jazz on FTE over 100 times since 11/2006.

Well took the engine back out today and found that my perch on the passenger side was mounted too far forward. The crossmember has two sets of holes that are usable for that perch. The perch needs to be sitting back about one to two inches from the front edge of the crossmember to line up with the other perch or the engine will sit cockeyed. Just posting this in case someone else does this swap

Installed and running. Had to change flywheel. Guy I bought it cheap from had wrong flywheel on it. Think he didn't realize because I got it cheap. Mid year change for 1979 on up to externally balanced. Wish I had checked before i had to have my boy take transmission back out to change it. Gets 45 lbs oil pressure hot and does not smoke. Paid $600 for this with core C6, 429 core and 2 good doors
