I have heard that one can take the mount stands from a 2wd frame and put on a highboy f-250 and then use stock 460 motor mounts for a 429/460 swap. has anyone done this? It would be much more economical than the L&L kit if it works......
the problem with doing that is the F250 4x4 does not have a cross member where the 2wd engine mounts bolt to. you might be able to modify them and add to them off the side of the frame but it will look like a hash job.
you can build some solid mounts that work quite well out of a 5/8 thick piece of steel and use the stock 360 engine frame stands... as long as you dont mind a little vibes. some have even reused the rubber insolator from a 360 and "hogged" the hole out and put them on a 460.
just some of the cheats out there if you want to skimp.
About 12 years ago, I bought a set of Hooker Engine mounts from a store called PAW (performance parts warehouse) Not sure if they are still avalilable but they weren't too expensive and worked out okay. Right now I am looking for a kit myself as I am looking to do that same engine swap again. This time for a 360 to 460 swap. Am looking for a bell housing to work too. If you find any sources of resonably priced kits, let me know eh?
If your Highboy is of the early 1977 flavor which originally came with a 351M or 400M (Modified) then all you have to have is the L&L motor mounts. Your towers will work. If you do end up having to fork out the loot for the L&L towers & mounts, you will get good stuff which they will replace if something ever happens.
If your 460 has the low slung Lincoln alternator, you'll have to also fabricate something there or again, get the L&L mount kit which raises the alternator on up enough to clear the crossmember. The L&L headers are for sure nice too. I know it's a lot of loot but again, they do make good stuff which might cause you a lot less grief.
i have a 73 f250 with a 390, i want to do the swap also. im getting a 79 f250 for free but with no motor. it is a 4x4 and originally had a 460. could i just use all the stuff of the 79 for my 73?? or would it just be easier to put my 73 body on that, find a motor and call it good?
On my 79 f150 4x4 that originally had a 351m, I used the 390 motor mounts(they are 2bolt and the 460 uses 3 bolts), bolted it to the 460(using only 2 bolts) and "massaged" the towers to fit. It didnt require much cutting/grinding on the towers(had to oblong the hole in the tower and use a larger washer)......plus, the mounts are under 15 bux at the local parts store(lifetime warranty)....never had any probs during the 3 years I drove it....just my 2-cent contribution, tho..
Nice work! Looks like it might have started life as a 2wd maybe?
