IDM questions..

So I have an opportunity to pick up an IDM from an 01 F450. I don't need one but I figure a spare would be nice.

Also, I think the later ones are the 140v already are they not?

What would you pay for one...

Also, what tools are required to swap it out? I know it's on the drivers fender... but is it just held there by 10mm bolts? any tricks to the connector... ?

Super easy to remove IIRC 3 bolts hold it to the inner fender 8mm i think could be 10, and 1 bolt on the connector. I would think 50 to 100 would be good, more toward 50 if just for a spare. I think it would be 140v.

Its a good idea to disconnect the batteries before removal.

I was hoping to just swap the connector to test it. ... is pulling the battery necessary?

Just remove the ground on both batteries before removing the IDM's. The IDM take 8mm and the connector 10mm.

I've had mine in and out a bunch of times and never disconnected the battery.

SD IDM's could be either 110v or 120v. The only ones that are 140v are ones that have been modded.

Wink

There are 4 basic IDM models: the 100A, 100, 110 and 120.
Within these 4 models are at least 8 different PCB (Printed Circuit Board) layouts, and IDM-110's and 120's often have the same PCB in them.

All IDM's are completely interchangeable with each other, and any IDM can be used in any model year truck.

The 100A, used in 1994 and early 1995 trucks

You might also want to know that, I think, the bottom bolt doesn't have to removed all the way. Just loosen it because there is a slot on the IDM that just sit over the bolt.

Also, if you just want to test it you don't have to take out your IDM. The wire harness will move over enough to plug in the spare for testing.

Glenn, it sounds like you have changed / tested a few. I have a spare I bought a couple of years ago and I haven't tested it yet (some would call me a procrastinator)
OK I have to ask when you test by just moving the harness over, how is the IDM case grounded or is it not necessary? It most likely is grounded thru the connector, but that may not be good enough? IDK

I personally never used that method to test but once my IPR stuck and I was trying every thing I could think of to get it going. So when I did this I hadn't tried the IPR yet so it didn't start with the IDM switched. That's a good question though, I would think the IDM would be grounded thru the harness but I don't know for sure.
