87-9/89 taillights

On the 87-9/89 taillights the sliver wraps around the side of the backup light, but does light shine out the side as well?

Not like you would think. I don't notice any great volume of light out the side of my '89. It might kinda glow? Never really paid attention actually.

If you want, I can snap a shot later this evening to show you what it is like in the dark. Or even before dark.

I personally like better the rap around backup lights, and they do shine out the sides, not alot, but just to say.

Ok, there's still some light out. Yes, they are aimed out at an angle, not straight back.

Surely if the lenses were polished up nice instead of being 20 yrs faded they might be brighter.

The ones on my '89 F150 are very bright as the lenses are mint, and they help alot backing up at night, lights up everywhere behind the truck.

Mine aren't totally hateful. It's a southern truck so everything is baked pretty well. They've always worked well enough for me.

Exclamation Good Idea !!!

On my 90 F250 I changed out the white backup bulbs to yellow 3156 extra bright LED's and ran a wire from the front, so now I have RED/YELLOW turn signals and red only brake lights ... much more visible day and night !!! At the same time I ran a switched pair of small 55W H4"fog" lights in the cut out in the bumper for the trailer ball !!! PLENTY of light back there... *** Eliminates tailgaters too !!!*** Dave

Amber blinkers(unless from the manufacture) are illegal, just like HIDs

Not where I live ... plus they operate WITH the red ones as per NHP !!! so not to worry !!!
And as far as HID's... if I needed those I would consider myself too blind to drive !!!

HID's aren't illegal here either. Dunno about the amber blinkers though.

After 48 yrs of driving on a CDL and dealing with more DOT enforcement officers than I can count, I NEVER was sited for my amber turn signals!!! Steady burning amber's on the rear were however illegal !!! As long as the amber's were paired up with a red turn light they were just fine!!! Just my $.02 worth !!!
