a buddy of mine told me i needed to install boost and pyrometer gauges in my truck? is this true?

does anyone make a gauge kit or pillar pod for these trucks? mines a 93 7.3 turbo....what brand gauges should i use etc.

You don't absolutely have to but it is HIGHLY recommended.

i would go with the factory match Isspro's. expensive, but so is rebuilding/buying another engine b/c you didn't know what was going on. if you want a bit more economical route then you can go with autometer's.

you can piece together what ever gauges you want. a few companies make pillar pods.

do you have an auto trans? is so then a trans temp gauge is a GREAT idea as well.

 

If you haven't messed with the timing or any of the injection components, it's not critical. That being said, it's never a bad idea to know what's going on. If you DO end up playing with any of the injection components and/or mess with the timing, you're really going to want the EGT gauge. Boost has its purposes, but EGT is more critical to keep an eye on.

Since you have a 93 (aka Old Body Style or OBS for short), you have plenty of options for gauge mounts. Some guys have come up with some creative ways to mount them with varying levels of success, but I still think the cleanest look is for an A-pillar gauge pod, which will typically hold 3 or 4 gauges 2 /16" diameter. Bricknose (87-91) guys like myself can use the same pod, but it requires some trimming. Autometer makes a 3-gauge pod for your truck. I know there's a company out there that makes a 4-gauge (GloShift for sure, but I do not know whether you can get them without the gauges) if you decide you need that many.

so if i have a manual trans i dont need a temp gauge? if not what should i use as my third gauge?

nope, if you have a manual then i would get a water temp gauge or an oil pressure gauge........or both lol

I would definitely go with a coolant temp gauge along with pyro, and boost is good to know but not critical. Also a oil pressure gauge is nice to have. Just so you know, I have never had any problems with the stock dash gauges but a lot of people have and I won't trust them. If you are a DYI kind of guy, these are WAY east, and cheap. The nicest thing about them is you can mount them anywhere, you can do 1 at a time or all of them at once, and it is easy to add more later. I am getting ready to add an oil pressure gauge to my 94.

Just because its a standard trans does not necessarily rule out the need for a temp guage especially if youre going to run alot of heavy loads.
