2003 Explorer Sport Trac abs sensor
#2
There are a few ways. The first way is with a scan tool that can access the ABS system. Another good way is with an oscilloscope. This will let you monitor the pattern output by the sensor to make sure it is clean and doesn't have any cracks or missing teeth which would be pretty obvious in the scope pattern. You can also use a multimeter to test the resistance of the sensor, but that won't necessarily tell you if a sensor is bad or if the problem is with the tone ring.

When you turn on the key, the ABS light will come on and computer will run a continuity test to see that all are connected. Light will go out after motor running a few seconds. IF not, pull the plug to the sensor back apart and make sure the pins inside are not mashed over. Next you put in gear and start to move. Once you hit 5 MPH, the computer is looking for movement of the ring gear by the speed pickup (counter). If you dont get a good count, the light ocmes back on. Normally changing out the sensor will cure this.
