Waterpump problem??

im just making 100% sure for reassurance if antifreeze is leaking out from behind the pulley that holds the clutch fan which is the water pump means i need to replace the water pump correct? it is also making and odd random knocking sound not that of a piston or rod the knocks are random hopefully not a broken timing chain whipping around in there i have a 1990 ford f250 HD with a 460 4x4 manual

If its leaking out of the weep hole on the bottom of the pump the seal is bad , the noise you hear may be the bearings in the pump , grab onto the fan and see if it moves side to side.....Lew

you probably do have a bad water pump seal. doesnt take long to do. just keep track of what bolts go where.

The shaft for the fan moving around is usually a sign that the pump is no good. I would be inclined to agree with lews idea that the noise may be your bearings, although they will usually wine or hum.

As for your timing chain, if it were broken, you would know really quick.

Just noticed when I fired my truck up it has a high pitched whine/squeal...im gonna check my fan in the morning. May need to do a water pump myself.

I agree if it were the timing chain youd know.

well it was definately the water pump and it was leaking from behind the spindle that holds the fan and spool so the bearings went bad but when i went to remove the pump we found out that it was JB welded to the timing chain housing and that cracked so i have to replace that too its $120 i dont have and not a whole lot of fun
