water pump question

My water pump went out this week and I have been trying to get it off. Does anyone know a good way to seperate the clutch fan from the pump? It is threaded into the pump with right-hand threads and I cant seem to break it loose. I have tried a strap wrench on the pully but couldnt get it. If I put the serpentine belt back on will it hold enough to break it loose? I dont know how to hold onto the pully so that I can crank on the nut. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
kelly manley

When I replaced my water pump I took the rad. and shroud off as well so I'd have more room to work and I'm glad I did. I took the water pump and fan out together and on the work bench finally was able to break the fan loose. A lot of people do it on the veh. with a strap wrench but I found it much easier my way. And I installed it back the same way. Much more room to work. Also, get a new thero. housing, I cleaned my old one three times and never got it to seal, finally the new one did.

thermostat housing get nicks in them... Usually using a gasket and some gasket maker will seal it right up... even with these little nicks

How did you hold the pump stationary while you cranked on the fan nut? We took the fan and pump out together so it sounds like I am following the same steps you took. I appreciate your help.

There are special wrench's for this job, 1 fits the nut on the fan, the second is larger and goes over the 4 bolts holding the pulley to the pump, with these tools it will come right off. In my shop we never remove the radiator, once the fan and shroud is off, you will have plenty of room.

I use a air hammer with a long chisel and give the nut a quick blast and it comes
right off! I used to work at a ford dealer and we had all the fan wrenches and most of
the time they would just slip. A older tech showed me this and now I use it on all
makes/models and it works every time.

Parts wharehouses/ stores (Advance, OReilly, Napa) have the special tool that rwilimo is talking about in their "loan-a-tool" arsenal. Just ask for clutch fan wrench set. The nut is very tight. My set has a hole for a 1/2' ratchet to slide into for leverage. I usually have to use it. Just remeber turn counter-clock wise. I also reccomend leaving radiator in and removing fan and shroud together. I would be leary of using an air hammer, but if it works...?

use the wrench set that everybody is talking about. I was lucky that a family member had a set at his shop just down the road....made life a lot easier.

quick trick for reinstall......instead of trying to thread the fan back to the water pump do it in reverse. the shaft on the water pump turns a lot easier than the fan clutch....just turn backwards.
