Then that makes sense it would be the Windsor with a C6. Nice score.

302 and 351w are in the same family. 351c, 351m, and 400 are kind of in their own group.
i had 73 f-250 with a 400 and it had cooling issues. it also got terrible mileage (8 mpg with or without a load).

Windsor Family: 221, 260, 255, 289, 302, 351W

Mid-block Family or 335 series: 351C, 351M, 400M

FE Family: 352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427, 428

Big-Block Family or 385 series: 370, 429, 460

The 400 can be built to be a real good runner. The biggest problem that plauged the M engines was the poor cylinder head design. They were prone to cracking. If you had a tone of miles on one, you were fortunate enough to get one of the good ones. Add to that they were low compression pigs producing very poor power outputs, and most were under carbed with only a single 2bbl.
I rebuilt a 400M for a friend of mine that wanted the original engine back in his grandpa's '78 pu that was given to him. I used 351C pistions,(increase compression) healthy cam, headers, good 4bbl intake and carb. Thing ran like a raped ape! If the Edelbrock cyl heads were available then, i would have used them and probably really seen some power gains. The 400 can be built, just depends on how much money you want to spend. The 335 series engines are heavy dinosaurs and in reality are just not worth $-wise building when compared to the Windsor family. One saving grace for the 351C is that it does use the same tranny as the post-'65 Windsor family.
