Anti Pollution Equipment
Hello everyone, this forum is a fantastic site, thank you for all the information.
I have recently obtained a 1994 F-150 XLT 4X4 Supercab Longbox with a 5.8L engine and the 4 sp OD automatic transmission. I have discovered a lot about the truck from the forum however I have not seen anyone mention removing any of the anti pollution devices except for the catalytic converters in the exhaust. Can any of the pollution devices be removed and, if so, which ones? What are some things to watch out for etc.?
All I want to do with the truck is to get better gas mileage. For my driving style and use it has sufficient power. I am planning on installing a K&N cold air intake and dual exhaust with low restriction mufflers. If I have to I will keep the cats but use low restriction ones.
Cheers from the Okanagan in BC

As for the K&N CAI, you would be better off just replacing the front air intake tube or snorkel as some say, to the air box with a either one from a 300, I6 or from a 460, V8. I think either can be had for around $45 @ your nearest junkyard versus $200 for K&N. This is a heated debate on this forum on the use of CAI's. I would recommend a newer exhaust as you pointed out.

Thank you timbersteel. I didn't know I could make it breathe better by exchanging the intake with another Ford one. My 5.8 has two snorkels so I'm guessing the intakes ur talking about get rid of them. Would I keep the original air box? I'm asking because I've never looked into it before.

Yes, keep the original air box. Just replace the front snorkel leading from the radiator area to the air filter box. The snorkel for the 5.0 and 5.8 sit's atop the radiator, where as the snorkel for the 300 and the 460 pull air in thru the grill area. I believe both the 300 and 460 had a better design for air intake versus the 5.0 & 5.8.

Thanks you guys. With the responses I've been getting I have decided to leave well enough alone and keep all the anti pollution stuff. I will, however, be using a K&N air filter and replacing the intake snorkel. I will also replace the stock exhaust with a dual setup.
Thanks for the help.
