Trailer Wiring Question

Hello folks. I just got the wife an 08 250 4x4 with the King Ranch package. It is a job 1 with only 36k. Clean Oasis report.

Is there an easy way to make the 12v+ hot with the key off on a 7 way round.

Im sure I will be back seeking more knowledge.

Thanks.

You sure it's not hot? I may be mistaning but it seems like if I push the brake pedal with the key off the brake lights will light.

Not the brake lights. The Auxillary 12v+. So I can have inside lights and water pump without shoreline power.

So you don't have a battery on the trailer? I don't think it wise to use the truck batteries for this. Motor requires quite a few amps to turn over

You are correct about no batteries. I only go without generator or shore power when the weather is temperate and usage is minimal. This is a horse trailer with minimal living quarters. All of the big draws are AC.

I know what you're talking about. ON my horse trailer The interior lights can be turned on an off as long as the key is on the acc in my truck. you want to know if there's a way to run the interior of the trailer without running the key on acc. right?

I would agree that this is dead batteries waiting to happen and it is not a good idea and may not be doable without a lot of rewiring. But if it can be done it would require you to pull the plug from the truck bed and run a jumper wire from the black (positive) wire to the yellow (sometimes back up lights sometimes general stuff) wire and see if that worked. If the backup lights come on then you are defeated. When you put the key in the acc position will the trailer interior lights work. If not then I don't see any way to do it without a lot of rewiring. If you jump wire the positive to any post other than yellow it is going to light up more than you want, like One side of the trailer running lights or brake lights. Of course the simple thing to do is make sure everything in the truck is turned off and use the acc key position. Hope this is helpful

Thats correct. On my 99 it was hot all the time. I just don't remember how I did it. I will check any further replies via cell phone, but now I am headed to the trail ride.

Thanks guys.

Btw my last rig was like that too, but for the life of me I can't remember how I did it. It was real easy. I'm gonna call my trail buddy when he gets home, he helped me hook up the last one. then if you dont know how by then I'll be able to help you

There is a trailer charge relay in the battery junction box (BJB) in the engine compartment. You can make the trailer charge line hot at all times by removing that relay and installing a jumper in the socket between the 30 and 87 terminals.

I would also recommend not going this route and instead installing a battery on the trailer. I have such a battery on my trailer and it allows me to run the lights with the truck disconnected.
