302 to 460 Swap

This topic has been talked about several times, but it seems like all the threads may say something a little different. I'm swapping out a 302 with a 460 in a '77 F100 2WD. The 460 came out of a '76 Lincoln. I went to a local salvage yard and pulled a set of frame towers off a old ford pickup that had a big block in it (believe it was a '78 F100). But a guy today told me that they would'nt work. Does anyone have a picture of exactly what towers I'm looking for? The second part to my question is that the driver side tower was a little taller than the passenger side. Is that how they should be or is this a mismatched set of towers. I tried attaching a pic but, I could'nt figure it out.

The right side is shorter looking because the engine sits about 2 inches off center to the passenger side. The mounts should work if they are 460 mounts,I just did it in my 79 f-100. Now it may be that the lincoln engine mount boses on the block are different than a truck one.

The Lincoln and truck 460 blocks are the same. The 430 and a couple of other goofy displacement motors are different.

I just wanted to ask, are you sure you have the 460 mount ? It is a 3 part mount ,one plate bolted to the block, then the part that bolts to the frame and another part that has the rubber part in it that joins all three together. You can make the 302 ones work but there is extra work involved , thats how i had mine until i located some 460 ones . FO-MO-CO , mounted a lot of there engines off center to the passenger side ,maybe to clear the steering,I don't know for sure.

I think their reasoning behind offsetting the engine and trans a few inches was to help all the U-joints wear evenly and freely.

Towers

The actual mounts were still on the motor when I bought it and there were two pieces, so the towers would be the third piece. But I've seen a few pictures posted of 460 towers and they dont look like what I have. When I pulled them out of the old Ford in the junk yard, the engine was still there, it was jacked up off the mounts. I know it was a big block and I was told it was a 460, but I really could'nt tell. And I read that FE towers wont work. I guess I will just have to try them and see. That's why I was hoping someone had a picture. But thanks for all the replies and advice.

I'm sure they will work if they came from a 460. Better then modifying the 302 ones , the only reason i did it was because i had lost,( misplaced ) my 460 setup, but found it now . Funny thing was after i found my 460 mounts, i decided to put the 302 back in, lol. I like the 18 mpg better than the 10 mpg i was getting with the 460. But all of the difference was not in the engines. The 460 had 4/bl carb and 3:50 gears behind it and the 302 had 2/bl carb with 2:75 gears , or close to that behind it.

I don't know if it would be an option, but don't L&L make a 460 mount that uses the stock 302 perches? I thought they did, but might be for later trucks.

Yes, they do they are allmost identical with what i came up with about 15 years ago when i put the 460 in my bronco. The main difference is the one they sell is one piece where mine is a two piece unit. I used mine in the bronco all that time before removing the engine and selling it last spring. So they had a good long test and are still bolted to the engine thats how i had the 460 in the f-100 i have now. What i done was take 1/2 " flat plate and drill it too match the block . Then take a F E passenger car mount that has the single stud bolt on it and that will match the 302,351m,400,stands.Add the fourth hole in the plate and tap it to run a bolt in to,bolt the mount to the plate ,then run longer bolts though the F E mounts and plate in to the block . Not the same but allmost and i was ahead of them,i sure missed the boat there ,L.O.L......Mine were a whole lot cheaper though, but more work plus i got to say " i did it" not ' i bought them'. cost was about $5.00 for the flat plate ,then the cost of f e motor mounts. I like building my own stuff, anybody with good credit can buy it ,but not everybody can build it. What fun is that ?

I looked at the mounts on L&L. The tech at L&L said that I could use those mounts with the 302 perches, but I would have the clearance to run headers. Like I said, you get alot of different opinions, but I've going to go try these and see how it works out. My last resort will be to buy the tower and mount set from L&L. The guy quoted me a price of about $275, so we'll see what happens. Thanks again for all the advice.
