There’s a scene from the movie 10 Things I Hate About You where several boys are asked if they’d date Katarina Stratford. The reactions are all some various form of no. This movie clip (included below) comes to mind every time I hear a story about how Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ (FCA) CEO Sergio Marchionne talking about which companies he’d like to merge with. The last, Ford, has also just shot him down.

Here’s how Mr. Fields responded when asked in China about a merger with FCA;

“I can’t speak to what Sergio or others wake up and want to say.”

Ouch. It sounds like Netflix and chill is officially off the table, then?

Last week Fields, in a written statement, said basically the same thing. “I can just say we have no interest other than executing our plan, delivering product excellence and driving innovation in every part of our business. That is our sole focus,” he wrote.

It’s a weird time to be covering the automotive industry with FCA actively looking for people to merge with. I haven’t decided if it’s a clever business strategy or just desperation. It’s starting to reek quite a bit of the latter, and is not a good look for the company.
