I’m installing a tachometer and want to pull power from the ignition switch. I was looking around for a pin diagram but none of the ‘64 diagrams matched my switch.
I did, however, find a diagram that matched my switch but it’s for 70-76 trucks. So it seems I have a later ignition switch. Can anyone confirm from the pics that that’s what it is?
I did figure out which pin is the accessory pin. Would that be the correct pin to get power (not the tach signal) to the tach? I have the battery disconnected while I work on wiring so I can’t probe the wires at all.
This is the “Bronco” tach that matches the font of the speedo pretty well. I got it hooked up. Tapped into the accessory wire from the ignition switch. Works just fine. I put a fuse on it just in case.
I do have a later ignition switch for some reason. Doesn’t really matter.
That tach does look good in there, nice match. You can buy small bottles of fluorescent orange gauge needle paint, then all of the faded old gauges will match the new tach.
That does look good. Now I don't want to be rude, but could you please post some more photo's of the rest of the truck. The dash seemed to be just a teaser.
Turns out I don't have any recent pics of the interior. This one is from when I first bought it. It doesn't show the Vintage Air or the Lokar shifter.
It does have Crown Vic front and rear. 350 (was in it when I bought it) and OD trans. I converted to Holley Sniper a couple of years ago.
Wow, that is a very tasteful restomod, the upgrades appear subtle, with an overall look, that in my opinion, is fantastic. Sounds like the upgrades you have under the hood with the OD trans, should make it a very comfortable cruiser.
I have read and or heard mixed opinions regarding the Holly Sniper system, which begs me to ask, how you like it, and did you couple it with the OD trans and or use their ignition system as well?
Thanks for the compliments. I can't take too much credit for the truck though. I bought it pretty much how it is. I added the AC, shifter, Sniper, and a handful of small things here and there.
The trans is not electronic. It's a 200-4R, so there's no controller for it. I did briefly consider upgrading to a 4L60 last year. I lost reverse gear somewhere between the 1st and 2nd stops on Power Tour. I did the rest hoping the whole trans wouldn't give up. Before getting the trans rebuilt, I thought about upgrading, but the controller is $500, I already had the shifter installed and it might not have worked with the newer trans, and my days of laying on my back on the garage floor schlepping a transmission in and out of a car are long gone. I may install the distributor at some point, but right now I'm pretty happy with how it's running.
I do really like the Sniper. I did over 1500 miles last summer on the Tour without any hiccups. I forgot to write down all the fuel info so I couldn't calculate mileage. The fuel system upgrades were the biggest problem with installation. My tank is already under the bed, but it doesn't have a big enough flat area on the top to mount the in-tank pump. I found a shop to modify it, but he took so long, and charged me enough money, that I could have just bought a baffled tank and dealt with maybe drilling a few more holes to mount it. I used a pump that has a little reservoir at the bottom for the pickup so it doesn't starve. So far so good. It took so much time getting the tank squared away that I missed Power Tour in 2024.
The only other problem I had was after startup I couldn't get the idle down where I wanted it. After a lot of horsing around and perusing the internet I looked at the throttle plates. Two of them weren't closing all the way, so there was more air getting in than expected. Took it apart and adjusted them and no problem since.
Thanks for the reply. My next question was going to be about fuel consumption, but you already answered that. But I would be curious what final drive you are using and now that you added the tach, what your cruising RPM's are at highway speed, and what that speed is.
The OD ratio of the 200-4R is .67:1. I'm pretty certain that the rear end ratio is 3.55:1. I tested it with driveshaft and tire rotations and it worked out to about 3.5. I confirmed that through some research showing the CV Police Interceptors (which is what the front suspension and rear end are from) had either a 3.27:1 or 3.55:1. One thing I did a couple of years ago was change the driven gear in the trans to correct the speedo, which was way off. It's pretty spot on now.
The handheld screen for the Sniper shows rpm, so I know that at 65mph the rpms are right about 2000. That's not bad and I'm pretty happy with that.
Mike, again, thanks for sharing. I didn't realise your truck had both the front and back ends swapped over, sounds pretty cool. I suppose that means you also have four wheel disk brakes, which is a nice upgrade for a truck that probably will make it past 100 mph should you wish to push it that far. Not legal there, but it is over here...
