Youtube video showing how to remove tailgate on '25 Superduty (for allowing use of truck camper)
Hello Folks - Does anyone have a good link or video showing how to remove the tailgate on a '25 Superduty? (particularly as relates to any wiring) - I want to take it off part of the time, when using a truck camper on the back........and want to avoid known issues if someone has worked through all the fallout of things breaking/etc w/ sensors or the 360 CAM system/etc.
NOTE - I prefer not to try and "relocate" the camera that's in the tailgate (to someplace I could use it as a rearview camera when the truck camper is on the truck)..............instead I would want to buy an extra camera (to mount on the back of the truck camper to use as a rearview camera), and just hook that into the truck wiring somehow.....This way, whenever I remove the truck camper + put the tailgate back on - everything inside it w/ the factory camera is still there and untouched.
So ideally, when the truck camper is being used while tailgate is off, I have a rear camera still that works thru the Ford 360 CAM screen. If that gets too crazy/complicated, I might just buy the extra camera that comes w/ an auxiliary screen i place on the dash. But still will need help to properly remove the tailgate w/o breaking things w/ sensors or rest of the 360 CAM system.
Thanks
Youtube video I don't know of. I've removed the tailgate out of my 26 two weeks ago and was super easy. The harness under the bed did disconnect very easy, on my 2019 was always a struggle. I did spend a couple of minutes to fish out the whole harness out of that plastic funnel where is routed through. Make sure you have the delete kit / set of plugs for the tailgate to put on the exposed harness truck side.
As far as relocate the camera I did purchase a spare tailgate camera and placed it in the plastic trim between bed and bumper. You can use a small project box and relocate the camera on the rear of the camper, super easy to do. Just need to get your hands on a tailgate camera and a wire to connect to the truck side plug. This one works
Tailgate remove: Open 45 degree and slide out right side set on bumper, next almost close tailgate so it is near vertical again and then slide to the right
Tailgate install: Slide in left side first with tailgate almost vertical, next tilt down to 45 degree angle and slide into slot on right side
As for wiring... make sure you have the caps to cover the connectors after you disconnect them all. No other tips other than practice and do it a few times and you'll get it.
Here is an older youtube video not sure it is what you're looking for though
@dutch71, did your new truck, the 2026, come with the tailgate delete kit? My new f450 did not , and I am here looking to track one down. thx!!
No the delete kit wasn't in the truck. Asked to a FORD dealer to get one for me and picked it up, at one cent cost. For reference this is the one I use. Although be aware if yours is a 2026 model as well, you'll have to ground three wires in the delete kit to make it work properly. Not doing that the truck will show tailgate ajar, reverse sensors not operating when the tailgate is off, and don't remember what else. There's a lot of info in this forum FordTremor and what to do. Very easy fix. Hope it helps.
Good day Dutch71 - Just to expand this conversation a bit more - focusing entirely on just safely/correctly removing the tailgate (particularly the wiring). I looked closer at this today on my '25 F350 and what makes it a bit sketchier is instead of just the single loom of wires to disconnect in one place................instead what i see .....as I follow the loom that goes inside the tailgate in the other direction...........looking at it under the rear bumper.............that has 2 "branches" of wires that split of.........each going to a connector.............so all total looks like 3 different connectors would have to be unplugged in order to even pull the wiring out of the truck when pulling off the tailgate. Do you recall if you faced that? Does yours have a rear camera in the tailgate? I don't know what all the 3 different connection points are used for so unsettling unplugging them all. Thanks
