info on the right truck for me.

I have been away for a few years. I had a 2008 F350 diesel that was a great truck. I sold it 3 years ago and I bought a 2021 F150 and it just isn't enough truck for me. I want to tow a 5th wheel and I am having trouble finding out what the towing capacities are for the newer F350's. I will buy another diesel crew cab, 4WD Platinum or Unlimited, SRW. I have the following questions. What is the towing capacity of a 2021 or newer truck in that configuration? Does the bed length make any difference in the towing capacity? What disadvantages are there in using a 6.5' bed vs. an 8' bed with a 5th wheel?

TIA for any help on these questions.

Dan

Most of the Ford tow guides should be available for download. They include tow ratings for various configurations, including different gear ratios.

Here is a section from the 2022MY tow guude.

The 2 main differences in towing between the short and long bed trucks will be that the longer wheelbase almost always rides better under load than a shorter, and the main difference is the fuel tank size, the 8’ bed truck will have the 48 gallon tank.

Yes, the 450 does have bigger brakes, but it also has dual rear wheels. IMO, This makes parking the truck that much more awkward when you're not towing a trailer.

The long bed does not have any problems with the camper hitting the cab in sharp turns,

"the main difference is the fuel tank size, the 8’ bed truck will have the 48 gallon tank "
Crew Cabs with the 8" bed ... Reg Cab's with 8' bed get the 36 or 29 Fuel tank

Buy a long bed, trust me. I have had short beds in the past and always end up going back to a long bed. Might as well get the 350 for all the capability you will ever need.

Yeah, but who would buy a regular cab?

I knew what you drive, and I think it’s a pretty sweet looking truck. Must turn on a dime!

My current truck (see signature) has GVWR = 11400 lbs. and payload of 3320 My 5th wheel pin weight is 2800 ish lbs. With the slider hitch weight, the 55 gallon gas tank I added puts my truck at 12400lbs. I want a dually for the higher GVWR and expect payload to be at least 4700 lbs or so. I REALLY wanted the F350 dually as the tire options are robust and it otherwise offers all I need, that is until I test drove one. The 350 long bed turning radius was too much for me. Then I test drove a 450 and stopped considering the 350. The 450 has a turning radius akin to a golf cart. I agree with all comments above, and yes parking any dually is less fun, but at least the 450 makes it a little easier. About my history: I started out with an F150 thinking this will handle all I need. The next trailer proved that wrong so I upgraded to F350 SRW. Our new trailer is heavier and I want to be well within my margins so I just ordered an F450. Bottom line; do your best to get your last truck first. Once you start camping, the reasons for upgrading trailers come from thin air but they invariably happen. It really hurts the wallet to keep upgrading trucks, let alone campers.
