I'm reasonably tall at 6'-2" and can barely reach the bottom of the bed reaching over the side to grab something out of my 2017. And then have to worry about scratching the paint with zippers on coats. Yeah I can step on the tire and crawl over the bed side, but a 32" step isn't very convenient either.
AMP makes a fold down step for $330/side. This was on the want list, but the truck is going to get a flatbed now.
I have a 23 and while I don’t use the step on the side of the truck a whole lot, I use the heck out of the small steps on the ends of the bumper. The grab handle and step make it easy to get in and out.
I had both AMP and Bestop steps on previous trucks. Basically the same thing but Bestop was lower cost. They both worked well.
When the 23's came out there was a lot of grumbling on this forum about the built in steps and how they were ugly and made the Ford look like a GM. I didn't have a preference either way. Since buying a 2023 and using the built in bumper steps several times I really have no reason to complain now. I also have a tailgate step but that's pretty seldom used.
I have a tri fold tonneau and have very little reason to use the side of bed step. But if I need it, it's there and the looks don't really bother me.
Having a Tremor, the running boards are a bit high at 23 inches off the ground. Instead of swapping brackets out for the regular Super Duty units to lower the boards (even though I had a very generous offer for brackets from fellow forum member Hackenbush) I opted to install GoRhino steps on the boards for the front doors only. Very seldom anyone is in the rear seats so I didn't worry about a second set of steps.
Count me in with those that are happy not to have them. Aside from looking goofy, the cab side steps are also a bit goofy trying to stand on and it’s much easier for me to just stand on the extended running board. The extended running boards just look better to me as well. I could actually see myself using the bumper steps, but I just don’t find myself ever really needing to use it. If I need something I just lower the tailgate (which I have to do anyway to open the tonneau) or I can reach over the bed. I’m only 5’10” too.
While I think the steps on the bed and bumper are a good idea, Ford botched the design and implementation. The GM version is much easier to use on both the bumper and bedside. If compared, most would agree with that.
Perhaps Ford can change the inserts in future years to make them more "ergonomic" to use.
Any one else want a bed step like the 2023 and 2024 trucks?
NO, that’s another reason I think the 2020-2022 are better looking. When I need to grab something out of the bed I just step on the tire or the bumper. I don’t have steps under the doors either.
