Automatic transmission position pointer, is it supposed to have a return spring?

Update:
Never mind about the indicator, found a great picture, it does have a return spring:

Still wondering what that funny storage space thing is for.
--------------

After working with the column, the indicator is pretty far off. I see it's a pull cable, so does that mean it has a return spring inside the gauge cluster?

BTW, what is that square dash storage box for? It's an odd shape. it's the one below the tach, about 3" x 4" and has ridges inside. Looks like it gets smaller as it goes back.

There is an adjustment wheel not shown in your pic to adjust the bar to the appropriate gear selected. That little cubby hole I use for gas cards or dump cards. I also used mine for my trans programmer so I can change the shifting pattern of my trans on the fly. In case I find something heavy to carry in the back while at the swapmeet

But it has these little rail things along the top. It's made for something specific.
