53-56 Door & Hinge Questions

Mounted both doors on my 56 and am adjusting the margins around the edges. I discovered that the lower drivers door hinge that bolts to the A pillar will not completely tighten on the bottom bolt. I am considering using a lock tight application on the threads before tightening that bolt. Do you think that will survive numerous door openings and closing? I don't see any other repair for that area since everything is assembled and painted.

The drivers door is a little inward at the top forward corner and a little proud at the lower rear corner. I have seen adjustments for this condition by using a long 2x4 at the top front corner forcing the door outward but that does not address the lower rear corner. Any suggestions?

1. Is the threaded insert stripped or is the insert itself broken loose and spinning?
2. The doors can be moved around considerably using various blocks of wood and some gentle leaning. I'd put the block of wood in the top front corner, and push in on the lower rear corner, and see if you can get them both to move at the same time.

As already suggested you can bend the door to fit. But you can also buy adjustable hinges which give you the ability to move the hinges in or out a little. They are not cheap though.

I studied the door this morning and have an idea I will try out this weekend. The top of the door is flush with the cab but both front and back of the bottom of the door look to be outboard from the cab. I think I can loosen the hinge to door bolts on the lower hinge and push the door inward at the bottom to make the floating nuts ride up as the door goes inward at the bottom. It is worth a try anyway.

56s are a pain to get just right. I worked on mine for quite a while and the bottoms still stick out. You gotta remember that the fit from the factory wasn't perfect to begin with. If you have a factory service manual there is a picture of a door adjusting tool that actually tweaked the whole door. Looks a little extreme but it worked.
