Anybody got pictures of the trimmed dash for an aftermarket Double DIN radio install? I believe I need ~1/8" more height to get the Joying unit into the cubby hole. But want to see what others have done before I start trimming it. Also, do I need to get the entire dash off the EX to trim? or can this be done with the dash installed?

Once you remove the stock radio. There will be a lip on the top and bottom they must be removed. You can do this while it's still in the truck.

 

This is what needs to be trimmed.
A not so great job of trimming, but effective.
My installed Sony. No need to remove the dash. I actually needed to remove the dash after I did the trimming for the USB extension I swapped into the 12v receptacle on the right. Would have made trimming much easier.

That is a great visual. Thanks. When I set the Joying on the cubby hole, it did not look like I need to trim that much. I'll go back and mark around it with a sharpie and then give it a go

 

On my Sony, I needed to cut out close to 100% of the marked areas. I used a dremel with sanding wheel for most of it and a file to get the corners. Plastic dust everywhere!

 

I know. No other way around it I am going to HD to see if they have a small sander with a vacuum attachment

 

ArmyLifer, if I may ask? Who made your bezel (trim piece) around your Sony?

 

The trim was a Metra 95-5817 Dash Kit. Came free from Crutchfield with the purchase of the stereo. It’s also what clips the stereo into the dash.

 

The Metra kit works great! They also have wiring harness adapters for most head units

 

If you are going to use the Metra 95-5817 Dash Kit for your radio, Make sure you have everything ready before you fully install your unit. That model is made to lock in place once installed. To remove you will need to disassemble dash. Just FYI as when I installed my unit to test fit it locked and had to remove my dash.

 

Oh yeahhhhhhh-forgot about that PIA. And yes you have to grind it down flat as well as remove the top screws--at least I did. It definitely does not need the screws. It will not budge. There are some youtube videos that are good.

Some people have luck connecting the steering wheel controls and some don't. It has to be done with one of 2 aftermarket adapters. This one is supposed to be the easiest. Good luck

I also had to grind mine flat and leave out the screws. Dash does seem quite secure without the screws. I didn’t need to worry about the steering wheel controls because mine is too old school to have any.
