My 79's plastic dash trim where the radio mounts has been hacked up by a previous owner installing a aftermarket stereo. I want to know if anybody has a dash plate that can be used for these dashes to mount an after market radio?
My dash was hacked up too when I bought it. I bought an unmodified radio/heater control bracket out of a junkyard truck, and modified it by opening it up and adding side brackets for strength. I then bought an uncut dash panel off eBay, and trimmed it with my Dremmel to match the opening. Here are some pictures of my setup.
Thanks for the pics That setup is awesome.... my trucks' metal bracket is cut off below where the heater control sets in it..... It's kinda depressing how badly mine is hacked.... thanks for the info.... guess I have some junkyarding to do.
Nice pics fmc400! I've linked them a few times and they even inspired me to do the same to my truck, turned out GREAT! I did just weld it all though. I couldn't be happier with it.
I wish somebody made an after market bezel, so I could mount a din radio. I'm not about to hack out the holes on mine.
Buy some spares at the junk yard. If the pieces are going to the shredder anyway I think cutting them up will be ok. Save your original pieces and you can always go back and return it to 100% stock. I have a DIN radio in my truck and could not imagine having it any other way. Its not like you have to cut the actual metal dash etc.

Well that is kinda why you don't "hack" away at it. You mark it well and cut with a dremel or some other tool. Then it will turn out great looking like in the pics above. I don't know about your area but where I live bezels and radio mounts are dirt cheap from the junkyard.
Wow, that is nice! I made my own as well. And if I was going to do a second truck I'd still make my own to save $60. But for those not wanting to do the modifications themselves this is a great option. I've never seen this either.
