Fasteners

I am getting frustrated that the cheap Dorman fasteners I bought for the grill (and interior trim) as they are starting to rust. They are supposed to be black - and stay black. Whatever coating Dorman uses is not holding up.

I found this section in Gary's Garagemahl that gets into the fasteners with some good links. 56904-S - ???Gary's Garagemahal

Going to the Fastenal.com website, I bought a box of the #0162759 "Phosphate screws". These are the "Flat top washer head" style. These look like the original type screw/coating. I think they will last.

There is another screw type used often. It's like the above screw but without the "washer". Fastenall p/m #0162743 (I think is the closest match)https://www.fastenal.com/products/details/0162743 however this is a "black e-coat" whatever that is and not phosphate coated.

I mention this for others who may want to get some quality screws.

BTW - Gary you said "Rusty's Grill" had the screws without washers (as shown in you photo). I wonder if someone didn't replace those screws at some point with the wrong ones. My truck has the screws like (0162743) in the grill which have the little flat washer head.

Mike - I hope you found this page: Radiator and Grille - ???Gary's Garagemahal. Both types of screws are used in there.

Yes that page is very helpful.
Clicking on the grill screw (link), then takes one to your page I linked to above.

I believe the grille was supposed to be held in with this type screw. That's what the catalog shows, and is what I've found on most of the trucks I've worked on.

Not on my truck. Those two screws hold in the trim that sounds the headlight and turn signal light, but not the grill or grill trim. That was the point I was trying to make.

Of course it is possible that sometime during my ownership of the truck I installed the wrong screws.

Now we need a new, never-disturbed truck to let us know for sure. But yours is a one-owner, right? So it should be close to the ideal.

#1 - DORMAN is CHI-COM

#2 - Most likely, the OEM fastener is still available from FORD

#3 - There is a HARDWARE source from a restorer. They offer a full HARDWARE CATALOG (as does FORD).

When (and if) I can remember... ... I will post the source.

On my truck having the correct OEM screw is not important - but I can understand why it might be on a restoration like Gary's "Dads Truck". I just want screws, bolts, parts that last as long as the OEM ones did.

The important point and reason for posting was to share some insight on the screw coating. The "Phosphate" coating/material screw appears to be closer, or matching, the OEM spec'd screws. And they are available at Fastenal.com for anyone who wants to know.

I never heard of phosphate screws before Gary's posts/links. But i can say confidently now, save yourself some frustration and skip the Dorman brand and get the phosphate screws.

LOL. On my truck I would...

I did not (but now I'm assuming not USA). But I don't care as long the part/item is good quality. Fastenall may also have some crap parts.
I'm just reporting on the phosphate screws.

Auevco has a number of the fasteners, but many of them can be found on eBay via the part number as Ford used them on many different vehicles over time. And the part number is shown on my pages.

Aueveco (and Larson) offer the same quality as DORMAN. Many FORD dealers buy from them for cheap shop supplies. I have seen very few dealers actually have the OEM fasteners.

-AMK PRODUCTS- is who I was trying to remember.

Theirs are OEM correct along with finish.

When I got my new headlight bezels and painted my grill, I opted to go with Stainless Steel screws. I didn't want to even deal with rusting. I got them at Lowes in a box for around $5. I've had them in for over a year now and they still look new.
