Power Steering Pump Pulley Removal

Power Steering Pump Pulley Removal
Have a 74 F100 360 2v, auto with 2wd.
Is there any special trick in removing the pulley to install on a new pump?
I have a metal pump and have tried using a pulley puller. Kind of like the same idea as a steering wheel puller. A straight shaft that presses against the center of the pulley shaft and pulls when the nut is tightened.
The old shaft has a large hex opening that is making me wonder if there is another removal technique that I should be using. Either that or the old pulley is really stuck hard. Feedback would be appreciated....

I just used my PS pulley remover/installer this weekend, to remove the pulley and aluminum mounting bracket off of this filthy Ford C-2 pump, to install on this newly rebuilt pump. The bracket and pulley were just as nasty as the donor pump they came off of.
Whatever you do, don't beat, bang or pry on the pulley to remove it and don't try to press the pulley onto the new pump. You will ruin the pump --whether it's the older Thompson 'pencil neck' pump or the newer C-2 version. You will have to have a puller/installer tool to do this without damaging the PS pump.

Thanks guys. Auto Zone had no idea what I was talking about and I was not surprised with their comment. Have had bad luck with their local outlet. Went to a small (non chain) shop and got a puller like the one shown above. No detail instructions how to set it up for the Ford but I should be able to figure it out. Wish me luck....Thanks for the input. Very hepful.

Removing/Installing a Power Steering Pump Pulley
These are the pieces from the tool set you'll need to remove the pulley from the pump.
Insert this button head pin into the end of the threaded piece.
Thread the bearing piece on.
Now, the pulley is ready to be removed.
To reinstall the pulley, screw the longer threaded end of this stud into the tip of the pump shaft.
Thread this assembly onto the shorter end of the stud sticking out of the pump shaft.
Hold the bearing component with a wrench and tighten the threaded stud with a ratchet, to draw the pulley up on the shaft.
.....nuttin' to it.

....forgot to mention.... once you get the pulley off and if you're switching out pumps, be sure to put your mounting bracket on the new pump and bolt it to the pump BEFORE you put the pulley on.
If the pulley is installed first, you won't be able to get the bolts into the bracket and the pump.

Thank you ultraranger. I was just about to declare total frustration. The kit I have is made by a company called Lisle. I wont boor you with their directions but the only result seems to be pushing the pulley deeper on to the shaft. I know. Wrong direction. Most of your components look the same. Let me try again after dinner following your steps. In general how is the pulley held onto the shaft? At some point does anything unscrew from the center shaft?

....in hind sight, I guess if I had known this was going to end up 'on parade', I would have tried to take better/clearer photos. Photos with a cell phone, under fluorescent lighting, is pretty much hit or miss.
