There are two different setups - depending on vintage and vehicle model. If the pulley is mounted with two nuts you will nees a slimline wrench to ge hold of the nut behind the pulley and hold it (and the shaft) still while you remove the front nut and the pulley. Others are pressed onto the shaft and you will need a puller with pulley arms. Even the pulleys that are not pressed on can be stubborn can be difficult and require a puller.
As a last resort, most machine shops will gladly pull the pulley off for 5 or 10 bucks and it only takes a few minutes. (I've had to do this for steering pumps and alternators).
Warning: the pump exterior is also a fluid chamber and is soft. Do not attempt to hold it in a vice or even pry on it as it will bend and this damage can make it impossible to get the pump to not leak.
I was pretty sure of the puller to remove the pulley. My main question really was how to put the pulley back on the pump without a hammer. I have a small block P/S pump that I want to use for a FE engine and the pulley offsets are different. Plus, the pulley has to be removed to change the P/S pump hanger bracket mounted to the pump from the 302 to the FE. Just for clarification, this is a pressed on pulley and I do have all of the brackets and other pulleys from a FE. Thanks for the info!
I installed a new power steering pump on my dad's truck just last week. I borrowed a steering puller from AutoZone for free and the new pump came with an installer(a threaded bolt used to torque on the pully).
To install the pulley, a bolt and large flat washer is all you need. The pump shaft is threaded so just set the pulley on and suck it down with the bolt and washer(s).
When you do press the pully back on using the kit don't use any grease to allow it to press on easier. Thats grease also made it want to come off while the engine was running so i just welded the p/s pully to the pump and said ohh well..If it breaks i'll just steal a p/s pully from a junk yard.
