Was at the shop of a very well known mechanic and diesel man today who was working on my truck. He has a duracrap that puts out some nice numbers and does tuning for sled pull trucks and stuff like that. He commented on my 6637 "I highly recommend that you change filters, the paper from the inside of the filter can be sucked off during high boost" Something along those lines. He said a fiber/oil element is the only way to go - but make sure you keep it oiled! He said he has seen these filters eaten from the inside out from the turbo sucking so hard. Any one buy this? Im a little skeptical ...
I have been running 6637's on my last 2 psd's and have no such problems and mine will pull upwards of 34 lbs of boost. Over the road big rigs have been running the same style paper element for many many years with no problem.
Well if that were true, you'd be much more likely to suck the paper off a stock filter cause its more restrictive. Not saying it couldn't happen, but it could also happen to the filters he recommended.
Have "WE" seen any failures yet. There are some out there putting up boost # in the mid 30's with no problem. I wouldn't be worried, but I can say that because I run one of those oil media filters
I never heard of the paper being sucked off during high boost. Not sure what he meant by fiber/oil filters but the K&N which is cotton/oil filter rates poorly in filtering out really fine dirt but as I remember had slightly better flow.

I know somebody on here left a bag over their filter after they washed the engine. Crushed the filter like a beer can on your forehead. Dont think it sucked the paper in though.

Yeah, that was me...
There was someone that posted here maybe a year ago about one getting sucked apart, but he said it wasn't water damaged or anything that he knew about. I believe it was either wet at some point and he didn't know about it, or it was just flat out defective. I've seen what they can take abuse-wise, including my crushed one -- I'm not the least bit worried. BTW, it wasn't crushed flat lengthwise, more like if you were holding a beer can normally and just crushed it in your hand. It was still scary...
I finally figured it was time to chime in here as I am a big supporter of the 6637. If the Duramax owner was badmouthing it I will take it for granted that is is something that will not work with his hand grenade waiting for a place to explode. The 6637 is by far the most cost effective mod we can do to our trucks. I have been using a 6637 style filter on my Cat 3208 for 22 years, the only difference being the Cat application is 5 or 6 times bigger and costs 3 times as much. It has been completely trouble free all these years, and that includes climbing the steepest grades America has to offer, been on the deserts, been to Alaska, you get the picture. Should have told the guy to take a flying leap.

Let me guess......he SELLS the oiled filters at his shop right? Too many people talk smack about things they just don't understand!
