Question Adding a vacuum motor to the snorkel flapper

Has anyone added a vacuum motor to the snorkel warm-air flapper?

I care about really cold conditions, mileage and pollution, so forgive my update needs. (There might be driveability improvements too, not sure.)

My 'Thermactor' wax-type thermostat in the snorkel doesn't work, ...and I do care. I have a cold-air pipe to the front. Using a thermo-sensor, the temps are only a couple of degrees above ambient while moving. It gets way too cold in the Colorado high-country! I've got a cable-operated control now, but it would be nice to have it be automatic.

I'm talking about one of the modern replacements for 9D612 in the housing assembly 9A626 below. Later, they were added to the top of the snorkel, and may have had a temperature valve in the air-cleaner.

Looking at the CarQuest (Advance Auto) online catalog:
http://www.myvirtualpaper.com/doc/ca...1361.html#1361
Some ideas might be: 57-774 (D7DZ-9D612-B,D7TZ-9D612-B), 57-7748 (D7AZ-9D612-B).
1973 used 57-7750 (D0OZ-9D612-A, D7AZ-9D612-C), but I don't know if it could be adapted to a '72.

(EDIT Solution: 57-7756 has an extra-long rod, which is required, and is modified for any 'pull' throw needed. Airtex 6V1017 vacuum motor will work. See ahead in the thread for details.)

Here is an example. I have no idea what the differences are between the different p/n's above. I would imagine there are differences in the rate of 'pull' travel.

Ideas and suggestions welcome.

The late 70s model Fords had such a vacuum motor from the factory, you might try to find one of those. My 1978 Ranchero with 351M has it.

Also all the GMs had those starting in the late 60s, if you could find one of those you could probably retrofit it to yours.

You mean like this.

I'd suggest finding an air cleaner assembly off a 70's Ford vehicle. Like a Dentside. There is a temp sensor in the base of the air cleaner that is in charge of opening and closing the flap as needed. It is in the pic below left upper corner. The disc under it with 2 holes is a gasket. This is not a Dent air cleaner. Just the best one I ran across to show you the sensor.

Pic: D7AZ-9D612-C F100 & Econoline applications. D0OZ-9D612-A was also used on misc 1970/72 cars.

And, there's this little charmer: C8AZ-9D612-A .. Carburetor Air Cleaner Vacuum Motor & Bracket Assy / F100/350: Use with both hot and cold air cleaner systems / Obsolete ~ 27 available NOS

1968 F100/350 360/390 before serial number D12,001 & misc 1968/70 Ford/Merc Passenger Car 289/302/390/428/429.

Yes Jefffafa, That is what I'd like to emulate.
Using a later '70s snorkel would be easier, I'm sure. I believe the size is a bit smaller, if I recall.

In my case, I have fabricated a metal cold-air feed from in front of the grill, and do not want to re-create it all for a different size snorkel. Painting and patina issues exist.

With any luck, someone has already discovered which vacuum motor fits the '72 style.

ND, thanks for the research. I'll do some measurements, and post them.

I don't think it's any smaller. As a matter of fact I think a Dent snorkel would fit right on your air cleaner body. But you are still going to need that temp sensor to automatically close the flap when there is cold air hitting the carb. And to slowly let the flap open back up as the air temp rises. I think I have a stock later model air cleaner at home in my attic. I'll see about getting some measurements and pics of it tonight or tomorrow. Will post. If you can use it you can have it.

Here is the later model air cleaner I have. As you will see the mouth opening should be the same as what you have. So trying to adapt yours to vacuum operation is more work than needed.

These vacuum lines (1 is missing) go to the temp sensor I mentioned. Early ones the vacuum source went directly to the sensor. Later ones, like this, the vacuum source went through the white TVS that you see. I believe it was to compensate for different barometric pressures. The big red nipple was for a Kraft hose going down to a Emissions Charcoal Canister. This can be removed and a rubber plug put in it's place. The ribbed nipple is for the PCV system source hose. There is a filter on the inside so the PCV system gets filtered air. There would be a hose/tube going from here to a valve cover or oil cap.

This front shot shows the in dent for the Dizzy. Looks like it would work great with a HEI Dizzy if someone were installing one.

I have been thinking of swapping to the same thing to my '72 F250 and interested in finding this same air cleaner/snorkel. I was going to fabricate my own fresh air hoses but wondering what vehicle this diagram is from and the squarish rigid firewall duct?

This exact pic is from 1975/87 Econoline 250/350 with a 460. 75/87 E100/350 with a 351W is similar.

Above pictured air cleaner on it's way to you. Dirty sample filter inside it. I boxed and taped it all up at home last night.

Jeff,

And this is why we all ought to be paid supporters of FTE.

It will get to -5F tonight, and I'm looking forward to installing this.
Testing and comments to follow, when all is in place, and we get another chilly snap.

Are you thinking to tie the vacuum source into the PVS lines?

I am running one, so the lines to it are available.
And already will be using a temperature sensor inside the Air Filter housing.
Considering a black-brown vacuum delay valve also (2-4 sec delay).
