I have a 2002 F250 RCLB 4x4 auto with the 7.3. About 6 months ago it started acting funny wouldn't start well sometimes others it did, then it would start running on half a bank. I did my homework and went ahead and pulled my valve covers and did the UVCH, resistance checked them reinstalled the covers ran like a top ...... for a few months. Then it started doing it again not as bad but you would have to put it in N shut it off and restart it to make her go, then it was fine. So I did some more homework looked into IDM issues so I pulled the IDM and inspected it, unit looked fine but had a lot of old diolectric grease all over it so I cleaned it and put new grease on it and it worked great ............ for a month or two. Now its so bad I cant even drive it a hundred feet away from the machine shed before it starts stumbling and acting like a 4 banger. Everytime I pull a 1316 code so is it possible my IDM is actually shot and needs to be replaced??? Also I was having a weird issue when its colder, the truck will act like its gelled up have no power go about 30mph and the EGT's sky rocket to 110+ if you hold the throttle. After about 1/2 mile ( when I got to a stop sign ) I would punch it and it would just roll coal like a Cummins and be perfectly health. Long story short im stumped, I have done injectors, glowplugs and harnesses, fuel filter and lines, running triple mileage Ams Oil with a Wix filter, all the general preventative maintenance is up to spec. I am gona try a IDM but I would like alittle help before I dump money into a new unit. Suggestions, Help please!!!
If you're getting a P1316 DTC, the IDM itself has codes stored. You need to run a KOEO or injector buzz test to retrieve the codes from the IDM. That should give you a better idea of where to start looking. In the meantime, remove the 42 pin engine harness connector on the left side and check the underside of it for any signs of chafing. It's known to rub on the valve cover and short out injector wires . . .
Alright thanks ill check into that tonight, do I have to bring it in for the IDM codes cause I don't think my crappy little scanner will retrieve them or do buzz testing.
