OK Guys time to write a Glossary on Diesels
In my fairly detailed research on why my 6.0 will not start when it's warmed up, I have been bombarded with the A B C's of Dieseldom. Im just a simple guy who bought a used Ford to tow a trailer. After 4 years and 80,000 trouble free kilos of mine, and 60,000 before I owned the truck, I have now come to realise the 6.0 are a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.
My problem, I'm not a mechanic and I'm not rich. Just a retied civic worker. In coming here to learn I have met some great people with some fantastic experence. So on to my wish.
The very knowelagable here flip out the A B C's like we newbies know what there talkin about. ECM, EGR,EGT, DELTA,TC,DI, HPOP,CAC,OC,IC,AIH DELETE,CCV,VGT,BLUE SPRING,SCT,BPD,CEL,IIRC,STC and I could go on for about 200 more acronyms. Sure some are simple. Exaust Gas Recirculation. Exhaust Gas Temperatur. Check Engine Light. High Pressure Oil Pump had me spinning. But some leave me with my head in knots trying to cypher what were talking about.
I have learned that Diesels are incredibly complicated and not build like a rock. One small design error leads to a trickle down to total disaster. I was always a gas guy. Give it gas, give it air, and add spark at the right time and away we went.
Is there somewhere in here a simple glossary of acronmys, that I could print out and have at my side as I surf here for knowlage.
Number one, please explain my DELTA. I know it hase something to do with engine heat. Why then did Ford not include a good factory engine temp gauge there by saving them and International about 10 billion in warranty claims?
Sorry if I'm ranting, but I want to learn.

May be wrong but delta seems to = Difference ? Someone will correct me

Determining cooling system health
Following the recommended coolant maintenance procedure as outlined in your owners’
manual may not be sufficient to maintain cooling system health. It is important to follow
Ford’s TSB recommendations for coolant maintenance. There has been a TSB issued for
this (TSB: 09-8-5). Details of this TSB can be found in the references section of this
document.
Ford issued a TSB 09-8-3 which deals with coolant loss. The purpose of this TSB is to
address coolant loss both external and internal (EGR coolers / head gaskets). Step 5 of
this TSB is to road test for restricted oil cooler. This step reads as follows:
5. Road Test For Restricted Oil Cooler – Setup and Observations:
a. Install integrated diagnostic system (IDS) select engine coolant
temperature (ECT) and engine oil temperature (EOT) PID’s on IDS
Datalogger
b. Carefully drive the vehicle at wide open throttle (WOT) / high load to
achieve maximum boost.
NOTE
FOR ACCURATE TEST RESULTS, ECT TEMPERATURE MUST BE GREATER
THAN 190° F (88 °C) WHEN MEASURING THE ECT AND EOT MAXIMUM
TEMPERATURE DIFFERENTIAL
NOTE
PERFORMING THIS TEST STEP OUT OF SEQUENCE CAN RESULT IN
INACCRUATE TEST RESULTS. THIS CAN BE CAUSED BY A LEAKING EGR
COOLER ALLOWING (HOT) COMBUSTION GASES TO ENTER THE ENGINE
COOLANT AND ARTIFICALLY RAISING THE ECT READINGS.
c. Observe ECT and EOT PID’s on IDS Datalogger. EOT maximum
temperature differential might occur at throttle tip-out.
(1) If EOT is within 15° F (8.4° C) degrees of the ect, go to Step 7.
(2) If EOT exceeds ECT by 15° F (8.4° C) or more at any time
during the test, go to Step 6

is to replace the oil cooler
Step 7
is to test head gaskets.
Without any additional TSB’s specifically for clogging oil coolers, the above statement
has been adopted by the community as the benchmark to determine a clogged or clogging
oil cooler. For the lack of a more in depth test process we will assume that a delta of less
than 15° Fahrenheit your oil cooler is operating within specifications. If it is above 15°
Fahrenheit oil cooler maintenance is required, which may include replacement of the oil

MurreyDav you came to the right place to learn
Thats what I did to when I got burned on an extended warrenty. Figured I would learn as much as I could Fix what I can and at the minimum keep on top of the maintence. And only take it to Ford If I get over my Head.
One of the best things that you can do is get some Gauges and keep an eye on things
And do reliability mods as time and money allows
Get a coolant filter going to its easy to do and not to bad $$$ wise

Thanks Blade and speaking of gauges....?
I've been convinced I need gauges, as this will not end will not end with the first oil cooler I replace. Expect it to start again in another 80K.
Now to the gauges. Looking into a 3 or 4 pod on the pillar setup. However am I going to have to put up with losing the grab handle. Hey I'm 60 next month. And for 2 months a year I do a part time work thing with my truck that involves in and out of the truck about 60 times a day. That becomes bad on both me and the side bolster on my leather seats take a beating from what is called "FAS" Fat *** Syndrome" Thats when you sooooo old you slide in and out and destroy the foam underpadding on the drivers side. It is already showing crushing and leather failure. Is there a pillar pod mount that lets you retain the boarding assist handle?

You also can get a ScanGauge II. That way you can keep the grab handle and still be able to read boost, eot, ect, etc.. I just picked 1 up and I love it already. It won't read egt and fuel pressure.
