My 4x4 c6 while leaking out of the pump seal, is also laggy when put into drive on a cold start. Reverse is fine, no problem. When put in drive, I've got to wait 2-3 mins and raise rpms to start creeping, then it catches. Theres no slipping through the gears, solid shifting other wise. I've been told this is probably the pump going out. I'm planning to drop the tranny to do the pump seal regardless, just trying to figure out if I can test the pump while its out, if thats likely my problem. I recently changed the fluid and filter, smells decent. I've spent the last two days looking through old forums and can't find the answer. Thanks!
Thanks, I wonder if I can get the necessary rebuild parts for the pump without purchasing an entire rebuild kit. Or if would be better to just try and find another pump. Either way it sounds like the problem likely lies with the pump??
The problem sounds like hard seals on the clutch packs, your loosing pressure, when you run it for a while, the oil warms up, and softens the seals so they will seal the pressure, if you have the trans out, best thing is to overhaul it, and get a new Torque converter too, debris collects in the torque converter like a centrificul filter, and can dislodge when rebuilding or repairing the trans, C6s are not to hard to over haul, i have overhauled the C-3, C-4, C-5 & C-6 transsmissions, and the cruse o matic trans, That cast iron Cruse o Matic trans will drive you crazy, the gov can look perfect, the springs look perfect, but it just wont work and make the trans shift, when that happens, you toss the gov as far as you can, and get a new GOV. LOL
PS, if the front pump is bad, its is bad and will not build up pressure when it warms up, the front pump is either good or bad, the problem is else where, possibly the clutch pack o rings, or leaking valve body gasket.
I am experiencing a similar problem with my C6. When it is cool in the morning or just starting to drive it engages quickly, pulls strong, and shifts well. After I have been driving a while it takes a second or so at over 1000 rpm for it to engage. once it locks up it pulls well. I just got stuck in a sandy wash and lost all forward pull. reverse is good as new!
any suggestions? I recently rebuilt the trans (first one) following the instructions in a haynes manual. Did they leave out any critical adjustments/steps?
Did you figure out the problem? I've got one similar.
All is good until it warms up. Then going from P to any forward gear it takes a minute or two and over 1000 rpm to engage. Once engaged, no problem until I have to park for awhile. Sound familiar?

I should have mentioned that the transmission only has about 30K miles on it since a complete rebuild by HB Transmissions. When having it done, I had a high angle torque converter and shift kit installed since I was frequently towing an RV. This was about twenty-five years ago.
Another thing I should add is that the truck spent years in storage. I brought it out and semi-restored it about six months ago.
The slow to engage in forward gears is only when warmed up after being parked for a short while and intermittent. I've been driving it for about a month now and this just started happening.
Thanks for the feedback.

From the little I know about auto transmissions and reading this thread it would seem the seals mentioned have "aged out" since its been so long ago they were renewed AND it sat for whatever number of years not being driven. Even with low mileage failure of seals isn't unusual under the conditions you describe.
