I just picked up a second hand trans this week.. (mine is whining like mad, shift's fine though, firm and positive, no slipping.) Apparently its in good shape, worked well for the guy, just the truck rotted around it. he wanted it out of his way so it was cheap. Here are my questions..
Should I/can I pull the pump and install it in my trans since overall mines still in great shape (which pump is it??) sounds like a gear drive, kind of zinging gear whine.
Or if I choose to use the new one what should I do before I install it? Reseal, torque converter (although I was assured its good..)input seal, tailshaft, gaskets? flush?
I would just rebuild the whole thing. I can buy the parts and have the converter rebuilt for around $200 so its hardly worth taking a chance on what the other guy said. If yours is whining like that its likely that some of the hard parts are bad so even if it shifts well it needs to be rebuilt and just replacing the pump might not change anything. Mine started whining a long time ago and still worked fine, however the thrust washer between the pump and front drum had broken and destroyed them both. Even if it is just a pump problem (which would make it shift poorly) there is probably a bunch of debris circulating though the trans ruining other parts. In other words, don't cheap out. Install a fresh trans that will last many years and save the hassle of pulling it out 6 times and half a$$ing it because you think you're going to save a few bucks now.
