I need Help! I'm trying to find out what the rear end is in this truck. My parts guy tells me that it's a Sterling 10.5, Chilton DIY tells me that it's either a Sterling or a Dana 60. Haynes tells me that it's a Dana 80. I'm confused . My question is what is the Pinion Bearing Preload. I replaced the pinion seal about a month ago, and now it's got metal in the oil and you can feel a bearing grind in the pinion area. Thanks!!
The single rear wheel trucks use a Sterling 10.5 differential. The DANA 60 is up front. DANA 80s are found on DRW trucks, F-450 and up I think (maybe F-350 also).
Do yourself a favor and take it to a shop that does a lot of differential work. If the pinion bearing is damaged you could have damaged the ring/pinion as well. Setting up preload is very important, I'm guessing you didn't get it tight enough the first time.
