I have a 351W out of a 78 couger and I found a set of gt40 heads out of an Explorer with 50,000 on the heads! What all needs to be done to fit my 351W I heard that you have to drill out the bolt holes but which ones and how much bigger?? Also the explorer has a roller cam, lifter set up will I have to change my cam, lifters, and push rods or can I keep the stock stuff??
Your 302 heads will bolt up but the bolt holes will have to be drilled from the 7/16" they are now to 1/2". If I am not mistaken cam lifters and pushrods can be used as well. May want to double check the firing order of the Explorer cam. 5.0 HO firing order and 351W firing order are the same, but not sure about the Explorer.
I said if I wasn't mistaken...I forgot...you can use the cam, but you would need these lifters...CRN-36532-16 (Lifters, Hydraulic Roller, Vertical Link Bar, Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Set of 16)from Summitt racing to convert. Expensive. This would also I'm sure require new length pushrods, but if you have to have a roller, it's doable.
Easy installation--no block machining.
Crane hydraulic roller lifters are designed for easy installation without machining on late model blocks, and they feature check-ball internal valving to prevent pump-up. They're precision CNC-machined, and many are equipped with Crane's anti-rotation guide bars. These lifters are available in an OE version, and in a retrofit version for vehicles without OE hydraulic roller lifters.
