Factory sway bar vs. Aftermarket (Hellwig) Any difference?
Does anyone know if it is worth it to swap out the factory front and rear sway bars on an 05 Excursion 4WD Diesel? I am just wanting to hear from anyone that already had them on front or rear and swapped out for a Hellwig and noticed any difference? I don't tow very often at all but I do drive the heck out of it and want to know if it performs any better than the stock sway bar.
Just the upgrade to poly urethane bushings will help slightly. Then the slightly larger bar should reduce body roll a tiny bit more. Overall, in a big heavy vehicle, it will take a heck of a bar to put it on rails. I would save the money and put it toward something else.
Another option is to get some of the bigger anti-roll bars from the Super Duty trucks. I believe there's various sizes available from the Super Duties but I don't know which mm would work best.
I don't know the science but I have a little experience. The bigger the better usually, on one car I used to deal with (4200 sedan) we would upgrade from 30mm to 1 7/16" and it made a huge difference. When we tried a solid steel bar 1 9/16 it was even stiffer. Based on that, I would make an uneducated guess that you would want a 40mm (roughly 1 13/16") or so bar for flat.
I'd love to learn a little more about the F250/350 getting different dia bars, do you have a link or idea if the change was year based?

Keep in mind though, the bigger and stiffer the bar is, the more prone to under/over steer it's going to be.

No, I don't have anything, but I believe the F250 had a different size as did the F350, don't quote me on that though.
I think there's at least one person on here that has used F250/350 anti-roll bars on his Excursion. Other than that, I don't know of much other info about it.
My '01 Limited X had no rear anti-swaybar, so I added a Hellwig unit. Wow! What a difference! But later, my '05 EB X came with a factory rear anti-swaybar. The Hellwig is history in my book 'cause the OEM bar has proven to be much more impressive. And no, I do not know "which bar" (which diameter) I have. All I know is that it came as OEM on my '05.
to be filed under ya' never know
I have an 05 Ex too and it DIDN'T come with a rear (sway bar, that is)
go figure, huh
but IF I recall...
the stock bar is 24 mm and the SD bar is 30 MM ??????
The hellwigg is bigger than stock, but a much better material from what I recall -
DANG now you are making me go searching
So as it stands nobody has replaced the oem rear sway bar with an aftermarket......? I guess that is a clue that it must not be that much different or that important to go with an aftermarket setup if you already have the stock rear sway bar.
