muffler fell off but noticed something interesting...

The other day i was driving and i noticed that the truck had a deeper sound to it so i pulled over and my muffler was hanging down.so i pulled it off and threw it in teh back of the truck. when i got home i looked closer as to why it fell off. one reason was is that the exhuast pipe was rusted completely through. but i did look underneath the truck and found that i had 2 catalic converters in a line. i know that can't be a reason but am i supose to have 2 catalic converters on my truck. my truck is a 1984 f-150 with a 302 2 bbl carb. everything on this truck is stock. i have never seen one before with 2 cats on it. has anyone else>?

Are you sure they are two cats and not another muffler?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Mar-02 AT 01:09 AM (EST)]All owners of 1987 to 1996 trucks have two inline cats. Very common in ours.

Search the 1987-1996 truck forum for reasons, but I heard the first is a pre-cat to heat up gasses for a full burn in the second one.

Ya..mine has the 2 cats. too. The first is a pre-oxidizer and the second is an oxidizer..or something like that. My auto teacher told me what they were when i asked him about using one for each side of a dual exhaust pipe setup. But they weren't the same cats., so i couldn't use them for fakes in my duals(cut em off and bash out the inner cone and replace em so it looks like Cats.). laterz.

Gamma - from what I understand, you are right about the burn. The first is a pre-cat that was put there to try and catch the unburnt fuel that gets through, and heat it. Then it would pass to the true cat.
